The canal and the Middlewood way are easy to get to for walking and cycling. For the more adventurous the Gritstone trail passes through the surrounding countryside. The village is in a valley overlooked on one side by White Nancy, a local folly, said to have been built to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo, and on the other side by Nab Head, from the top of which are spectacular views.
