Skylark Shepherds Hut, village location nr Bath
Skylark is a luxury shepherds hut nestled under trees in a meadow in Somerset. It is located just outside a small village about 15 mins drive to Bath. If you like the idea of being in nature but not wanting to camp, this is a good solution. This little haven sleeps 2 in style. There is a bathroom with shower, a kitchen area if you want to cook yourself breakfast and a pull down bed with a star gazing window. A car is highly recommended to access the site. The shepherds hut is in a rural setting but you won’t be completely alone. It is situated close to a small private airfield which sees the occasional microlight and small two seater aircraft taking off and landing on a grass runway. You may be lucky enough to meet a pilot during your stay but as planes aren’t that frequent, it’s not a given. It's a peaceful area with spectacular panoramic views across Somerset and Wiltshire. Occasionally there may be sheep or cattle grazing on the land behind the hut. There is no wifi, but 4G is excellent. There is no TV. Adjacent to the hut is an enclosed decking area with a table and chairs. There is also a gas barbecue which you are free to use. If you would like to order a BBQ pack from my local farmer supplier, please let me know and I'll have it ready for you in the fridge at check-in. There is no mains electricity at the hut. The lighting and hot water operate on a combination of solar and back up diesel generator. This does mean that sometimes the power will go off and you will need to switch to back up. It's a very simple process and there are notes in the cabin to explain what you need to do. There is an additional cabin nearby, along with several hangars for the airfcraft as well as a few tractors and bits of agricultural machinery for use on the land. Some of the land the hut is on is used to grow crops, so depending on the season you're visiting, will look slightly different. In autumn the crops will have been harvested, so the ground is empty. The shepherds hut is set within its own fenced enclave which you will be able to access directly from the car park. In winter the car park can be very muddy, so stout shoes or wellies are recommended. I live in the village of Norton St Philip which is a 5 minute drive from the site of the hut. I will be available by phone at any point during your stay. Either myself or very occasionally, my co-host, will meet you at an arranged place to give you the keys to the hut and access to the site. Skylark is situated not far from the quintessentially English village of Norton St Philip. There is a pub in Norton - the George Inn - which has been serving ale continuously since 1375 and was the site of the hangings in the Pitchfork Rebellion (1685). The George Inn has a beautiful beer garden overlooking a cricket field and a 13th century church. There is also a co-op for supplies. Norton is a 15 minute drive from Bath, famous for its Roman-built baths. It's also great for shopping. If you're feeling adventurous you can also cycle there through the village of Wellow, and along a disused railway line, through some former train tunnels. Directly opposite the entrance to the site of the shepherds hut is Farleigh Road Farm Shop which also has a cafe. It's a great place to buy local produce and they do a decent Sunday lunch. To get the best out of your stay at the hut, you will need to come in a car. There is a bus service into Bath which goes from Norton St Philip, but it can be a little irregular and timetabled buses can sometimes not turn up (especially in these post lockdown times). Norton St Philip is about a 45 minute walk from the hut through farmers fields, so bring your wellies in the winter. Bath is easily accessible by car. If you have an uber account you can arrange to be picked up at the Farleigh Road Farm Shop, BA2 7NG which is a 5 minute walk from the hut. Skylark shares its space with an airfield. This means occasionally there will be people (pilots) around the site. If you are looking for complete seclusion, we cannot offer that. For our dog owner friends, there can be dogs who are sometimes at the site - they won't be on leads, but we can make sure introductions are done to your pet. In addition, there can be sheep or cattle in the field behind the hut and there is a pen with chickens. Although we are mainly solar driven, the back-up generator will need to be used - especially in the winter and on dreary grey days. This is not an intrusive sound to the shepherds hut, which is fully double-glazed. In addition, there is a gas barbecue on the deck and a table and chairs (with cushions and blankets) where you can relax in the summer months. If you would like to order a barbecue pack in advance, just let me know when you book. There is a log store with logs available to use for the woodburner in the winter.
