Local amenities include restaurants, bank, train station How to get to our place Coming from Kandy (by bus): Get off at Matale Clock Tower Junction – take a tuk-tuk to Vidyala Pl Road. The tuk-tuk ride is about 2-3 minutes long. Coming from Dambulla (by bus): Get off at just before Matale post office. – take a tuk-tuk to Vidyala Pl Road. The tuk-tuk ride is around 3 minutes. Places of interest Thanks to its central location, Matale is a great place to act as a base for exploring the many highlights of the central region. For those looking to get off the beaten path, there are many chances to go trekking through lush rainforests and stunning mountains. The Knuckles Mountains are just a heartbeat away from Matale rising to 2000m above sea level giving stunning views of the Central Highlands World Heritage site. The rainforests also host a variety of rare plants and animals that won’t be found anywhere else in the world. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sigiriya is also within a short distance from Matale. Sigiriya is a former royal capital of Sri Lanka and has a variety of beautiful buildings carved into a 200m rock that dominates the entire site. With stunning gardens and ancient ruins scattered throughout the area, it gives visitors a glimpse into the rich history associated with the region. Matale itself has several highlights which can be accessed by a short walk or tuk-tuk ride. The town centre hosts an exotic spice garden which will enliven all the senses and showcase many of the aromatic spices that are found throughout the region. The Sri Muthumariammam Temple is also close by and is a fine example of Tamil architecture showcasing the rich diversity and history of Sri Lanka. The bustling city of Kandy is less than an hour’s drive and is one of Sri Lanka’s most important cities. Kandy particularly comes alive during July/August with the Esala Perahera Festival celebrating centuries of Sri Lankan culture. With dances, parades and shows all based around the rich Buddhist history of the region, it is a must see for any visitor and we can help organise transport for anyone wanting to stay until the very end of the day’s festivities.
