Curlew, high up in Mountain country, has a cool, crisp climate, a world away from the heat of the lowlands. Curlew Retreat is generally 5° - 9° degrees cooler, with the biggest differences in winter. With 100 beautiful acres to yourself, follow the graded track to the gorge and enjoy the natural rock swimming pool, or simply relax in the quiet and solitude. The Chalet The owner does not live on the property so the entire chalet and grounds are available to guests. Explore Curlew Curlew has 100 acres to explore. It has 1km of river frontage. To get you started, we have a 200 meter graded track marked with a granite sentinel down to Curlew Gorge. See the granite outcrops, natural caves, 16 meter natural rock swimming pool. Wilderness Curlew is set in the Granite Belt’s spectacular natural wonderland, home to 5 national parks. Visit the ruggedly beautiful Girraween, Sundown, Boonoo Boonoo, Maryland and Bald Rock National Parks, all with extensive hiking trails. Curlew Retreat is a chalet on a 125 acre property. We live in Brisbane, not on the property. When you book you will be given a welcome email detailing how to get here and how to get into the chalet. We include a welcome basket with Foxy's Bakery par bake vienna loaf, for your to bake of yourself in the morning butter, locally sourced jams, coffee beans for the automatic coffee machine, milk and Suttons Apple juice. This is to get you started on your first morning at the retreat. We also include a full compendium with instructions covering all you need to know. Being in your own luxury chalet on your own estate is all part of the Curlew Retreat experience. Wine and Dine By day follow the Wine and Food trail using the complimentary local map. At night prepare a gourmet meal with your finds in the state-of-the-art kitchen or barbecue under the stars on the outdoor gas located on the deck. Mt Lindesay Road Explore the Demon Fault which lies just 10 km to the east. Along the fault you will find the spectacular Undercliff and Boonoo Boonoo falls. Both are readily accessible from Curlew retreat along the Mt Lindesay Road. Essential Provisions Visit some of the 10 nearby wineries and store your purchases in Curlew Retreat’s built-in wine rack. Buy some fresh sour dough bread from Sam’s at Thulimbah. Or some Apple and Ginger juice or Cider from Sutton’s Cidery on Maryland road. At Amiens pick up some home baked lemon scented Italian shortbreads from Eagle produce. And of course, the famous Fruit Run lies 10 minutes west of Curlew. In season choose fresh fruit such as Cherries, Pears, Apples, Peaches, Nectarines and Grapes from the many farms such as Mario and Angelo’s Wheel In Orchard. Ask Angelo for a braid of his Italian Garlic. Or head further south. Visit Mt Stirling Olives for some delicious Olive Tapenade. Get some of the delectable Chilli Onion Jam only available from the cellar door at Ballandean Estate. Relaxation and Romance Or stay at the Curlew Villa and retreat from the world. Enjoy the music library. Or choose a DVD from the DVD library and watch it on the High Definition plasma TV. Heat some complimentary aromatherapy oils and fill the villa with soothing scent. Take a spa bath with someone you love. Then light the log fire and curl up on the sofa. Relax in total privacy, far from the world. Crystal Clear Nights After dark, a new pleasure awaits. The 800 metres of altitude and a sky free from any lights opens up the majesty of the thousands of visible stars in the Milky Way and the Clouds of Magellan together with the planets of the solar system. Take it in with the naked eye or use the telescopes for a closer look. Collapse into bed and after a night of perfectly serene sleep, be lulled awake by birdsong and the soft glow of the morning sun through mist. Make an espresso and take it out to the deck to bask in the morning sun. Curlew Retreat can be reached in three ways, all of which can be comfortably travelled in a normal car. Each route has some good quality gravel sections ranging from 4 km to 19 km depending on the route. From the New England Highway 1.Drive to Thulimbah. Turn left at the Vinzenco’s onto Maryland Road. There is a Big Apple outside. Drive 3 km east. 2.Turn left onto Wylie Creek Road and drive east for 12 km. This route has 15 km of unsealed, but good quality, road. It is quickest way to and from the wineries. From Stanthorpe, via Mount Lindesay Road 1.Drive east on Amosfield Road. 2.Turn left onto Mt Lindesay Road and drive north. 3.Turn left onto Wylie Creek Road and drive west for 4 km. This route has 4 km of unsealed road. It follows a very scenic route. From Killarney, via Mount Lindesay Road 1.From Killarney drive south on Main Road. 2.At Legume, turn right onto Mount Lindesay Road and drive south. 3.Turn right onto Wylie Creek Road and drive west. Curlew is 4 km along. This route has 4 km of unsealed road. It is the quickest from Brisbane When you arrive there is one carport. There is ample parking for extra vehicles around the chalet. Curlew Retreat is located at: 399 Wylie Creek Road Maryland NSW 4377 It is 2 hours, 15 minutes from Brisbane at the Granite Belt. It lies 20 minutes North East of Stanthorpe and 10 minutes east of Thulimbah. To help find us, there are direction signs placed at the major junctions of Wylie Creek Road. Internet & Phone Connectivity At Curlew Curlew Retreat is in a remote and rugged area. We often get asked about Internet and phone access by guests. WiFi Internet access 128 kbps is provided over the NBN Satellite. Telstra mobiles will have limited coverage but operate from inside the villa. Ensure you have 3G enabled. Mobile reception for other mobile phones is available 2km east of Curlew Retreat.
