The Loire Valley The Loire Valley region is situated in the centre of northern France, south-west of Paris. The 'official' French region that includes the Loire Valley is called 'Centre', although this name is not well known outside France. The Loire valley / Centre region has several villages that are classified among the 'most beautiful villages of France' to discover and explore: These include Lavardin (near Blois), Candes-Saint-Martin (near Saumur); Apremont-sur-Allier (near Nevers); Montresor (near Loches); St-Benoit-du-Sault and Gargilesse-Dampierre (near Argenton-sur-Creuse); and Crissay-sur-Manse (near Tours) and Angles-sur-l'Anglin (33 km). Castles: • Many of the castles here in the Loire Valley were originally medieval fortresses that got substantially rebuilt during the 15th-17th centuries to make them more comfortable for living in. This is why you will often see defensive structures that remain from these earlier buildings in the castles you visit, such as towers (now with windows added) and moats (now purely decorative). The most visited castles are: •South-west of Orléans: the Château de Blois, the Château de Chambord, and Château de Cheverny, with Château de Valençay a little to the south of this group • Between Blois and Tours: the Château de Chenonceau ( one of our favorites) and Château d'Amboise, as well as the Chateau de Clos-Lucé and Domaine Royale de Château-Gaillard, also in Amboise Other areas of Interest: •30 min close to Loches are the villages of Beaulieu-les-Loches and Chanceaux-prés-Loches, both Ferriere-Larcon and Boussay are very pleasant. •1 hour: Rigny-Usse; Chinon (wine caves); Tours; Vouvray (popular wineries); Chenonceaux; Amboise; Villandry; Richelieu; Poitiers; Futuroscope, Orleans (capital of the region) and Blois. We also suggest you visit Beaugency, site of one of the famous battles of Joan of Arc, and Valencay. A little further off the beaten track, to the north-east is the quiet village of Saint-Ouen-les-Vignes -very scenic. We have left many brochures of things to do in the area in the basket. Unless you see more than one, please do not remove these so that other guests may refer to them too. The Tourism Office in town is also a great place for information, brochures and maps. It is located next to the Marie and open 7 days
