The Wilderness Cabin in Calagno is a unique destination not suitable for everybody: no hot water, electric power is generated by a solar panel but with a small battery so if it's not sunny you could easily run out of electricity; the only way to reach the Cabin is to walk on a trail for 1.45/2h from the Falmenta parking area. But for those who are looking for a deep wilderness experience, this is the best choice to go for! Nature, only nature. The Wilderness Cabin is the ultimate destination for wilderness lovers. It is located in Calagno at 1200mt, a small hamlet of old stone cabins on the Valle Cannobina mountains. Behind it there is the Zeda Mountain (2150 mt). This ancient hut was used in the last century as a mountain pasture. Today it is renovated and welcoming for a holiday in the pure spirit of the mountains. Nobody lives there, so there are high chances that you'll be the only human being staying there. The Cabin has a huge uphill field in front of it, that gives you the best views on the whole valley; at the end of it you can also have a hint on a small triangle of Lake Maggiore. But the best views are by night, I bet you've never seen so much stars in the sky (thanks to the complete absence of light pollution). The Wilderness Cabin has 2 terraces; inside you'll find a small living area with a kitchen corner with gas stove, the fireplace, a table with bench and chairs, a TV and some furnitures with the basic food (salt, pepper, oil, coffee) and equipments. Going upstair you find the bathroom (sink, toilet and bidet, only cold water available) and the bedroom with one double bed and one bunk bed. A large table for outdoor use is available. Next to the Cabin there is a covered room with wood available. The Wilderness Cabin can be reached only by feet, through a trail of 1.45/2hrs from the Falmenta parking area. With a motorbike or a bike it is possible to reduce the travel time of 1 hour ca with a difference in altitude of 300mt. The hut holiday is only suitable for people who are practical in mountain life, in isolation and with a strong spirit of adaptation. Clothing strictly suitable for mountain life is required. Good coverage of the phone signal. The water comes directly from an external source with a reserve of 300 liters and exclusively cold. Outside there is a "solar shower" (essentially the water is collected in a rolled black tube, it does not heat up electrically) which allows you to take short hot showers (logically, only in sunny weather conditions for heating). There is no refrigerator available. Any lighting of fire outdoors at any time and condition is absolutely prohibited. For cooking on the fire, the internal fireplace with grill can be used. The wild area is inhabited by many animals: deer, chamois, roe deer, foxes, weasels, martens, wild boars; Wolves, vipers, birds of prey and nocturnal birds have recently been spotted in the area. It is normal to hear their song especially in the evening and at night (owls and barn owls). Sometimes it happens to be visited outside the cabin on the stone wall by small dormice, noisy in moving stones or walking on the roof (these are harmless animals). No animal is inherently aggressive if it does not feel attacked, but we must respect their environment and use prudence in behaviors and in relating with them. - Therefore, avoid continuous loud noises (Loud music) - Never feed wild animals. - Never approach the puppies and do not touch them! Welcome to the truest and purest wilderness - Alfio - You will have access to the whole property; nobody lives in the hamlet so you could easily be the only humans around. My father Alfio will lead the guests from the Falmenta parking area to the Cabin, providing directions and advices. There is a "luggage&goods" transport service (no people) with a 4x4 tractor until the end of the road (nearly half way, about 1 hour from the house, unless access is forbidden). We are always available by phone. Calagno is a hamlet of ancient stone huts, mostly in ruins; only a few of them are restructured but there are no people living permanently there. The place is in the middle of the wilderness with woods all around. The only way to reach the Wilderness Cabin and to go around is by feet. Before choosing this destination remember that: - there is no hot water - electricity cannot be guaranteed as it is provided by a small solar panel with a small battery; electricity depends on the sun only. - there is no Wi-Fi, but the phone signal is good. - you have to walk on a mountain trail (medium difficulty) going uphill for 1.45/2h from the Falmenta parking area. There is no chance to reach the Cabin in another way (unless you have an helicopter!) - you'll be in the complete wilderness so there are no people living around you; but there will be animals for sure so pay attention in walking around, especially on stones as these could hide snakes (also poisonous ones). In the area there are some families of dormice that you could hear especially at night walking on the roof or moving some stones (these animals are harmless). - for any medical necessity you have to contact the 112; assistance will be handled by helicopter from the closest hospital (usually Verbania).
