Old Village Stone House w/ Industrial loft feel
New York loft meets an old stone village house. We channeled our New York roots to bring light, air and an efficient use of space to this house. Perfect base to explore the beautiful countryside,- Cathar Chateaux , Carcassonne or just enjoy the pleasure of staying local. Have supper on your private roof terrace, take a two minute walk to swim in our shared swimming pool or laze in our garden. The house is built on an incline and is on three levels with a roof deck. The bedroom is downstairs -so nice and cool for the summer months.- with its own window door that opens onto a small alley. The ground floor has a sofa bed as well as wet room bathroom or shower and toilet. Upstairs is the open plan fully equipped kitchen/dining area. One flight up from here is the private roof deck with views out onto the village. The pool, like in a hotel , is shared with our three other houses It is a two minute walk up our little street. The river garden is a three minute walk and has table and chairs for dining al fresco. There is a simple cafe in the village where you can get a drink as well as a post office. A butcher van comes to the village once a week, so if you hear a horn about 5 pm on Saturday you will know who it is. There are lots of good farmers markets locally. We tend to go to the one in Esperaza -15 minutes from us - on Sunday morning to buy our fresh fruit and vegetables as well as eggs, cheese, bread, olives and honey. After that we of course sit in a cafe and watch the world go by. There is also a market in Limoux on Friday mornings.- also a 15 minute drive from us. Guests have the whole house as well as their own roof top terrace for their own private use. The garden, pool and terrace above the pool are shared with the other houses. We are normally in residence so are on hand if you need help or advice on anything from a good picnic spot or hike to a good restaurant or day trip. We are located in a small village in the foothills of the Pyrenees,in the heart of the wine making area of the Aude- surrounded by vineyards-as well as close to many of the Cathar Chateaux: Rennes le Chateau- made famous by Dan Brown’s novel The Da Vinci Code, Chateau de Peyrepertuse, Montsegur, Puilaurens to name but a few. You can go gliding in Puivert- 25 minutes from us as well kayaking, rafting, or tubing. The caves of Cabrespine are also worth a visit as well as the world famous caves de Niaut. Worth the drive. We are 15 minutes from Limoux - our closest Market town, 45 minutes from Carcassonne. 1.5 hours from Toulouse , 1.5 hours from the coast and 4.5 hours from Barcelona. Our closest airport is in Carcassonne and otherwise there are flights into Toulouse, Perpingnan, and Barcelona is you don’t mind the longer drive. You will need a car to fully enjoy what our area has to offer locally. You can bike but we are in the foothills of the Pyrenees so not for the faint of heart...! There is on the street parking and we have bicycles that guests are more than welcome to use. Do be warned we are in the foothills of the Pyrenees so biking is not for the faint of heart. If you arrive on a Sunday, do note that most everything is closed, so you will want to make sure to have some few basics with you or give us a heads up if you get stuck. Sunday morning is our favorite local farmers market in Esperaza- 11 km from us- so if you get in early make sure to catch this for your provisions. One or two supermarkets are open Sunday morning until 12;30. If you wish to make a winter booking, the heat is provided by a wood burning stove in the downstairs bedroom as well as two electric radiators- one for the living room floor and one for the top floor. There is a winter heating surcharge. We are often around to help show you how the wood stove works if you aren’t familiar with one. While it isn’t as easy as central heating, we find it both cozy and beautiful.
