Your accommodation is an upstairs apartment in a recently renovated 1920s building at the quieter end of the main street of Kandos: a small, friendly town just over 3 hours from Sydney. The apartment has views over town and to the mountains beyond. Our rooms are generous and well-detailed. 300m down the road is an excellent licensed supermarket. There are many pleasant walks nearby and we're close to Rylstone's wineries and Wollemi National Park. The space is generous and celebrates the character of the old building, while being completely refurbished. The kitchen is well-equipped for making your own meals, and there is a dining table. You will have the whole upstairs apartment to yourself. Guests are welcome to use the back garden and help themselves to any fruit and vegies. BBQ provided -- please ask for instructions. When you arrive in Kandos we'll greet you to hand over the key, and you are welcome to contact us during your stay. We live 2 minutes walk away up the road. Brett is often around downstairs during the day, or in his workshop in the back garden. You'll have the top floor to yourself, via its own front door from the street. Our apartment is an ideal base for exploring the Kandos-Rylstone region. If you will be arriving late in the afternoon and plan to eat out, we recommend making a booking at Peppinos Mexican Restaurant, The Globe Hotel or the Rylstone Hotel, all only 10 mins drive away in Rylstone. On the weekends you can book for dinner at Henbury Golf Club in Kandos. During the day, we highly recommend a visit to Kandos Museum, a short walk along Angus Avenue then up Jaques Street to the former Spanish-mission style church (open Wednesday to Sunday 10 to 4). On the way you'll walk past Wayout Artspace, the home of Cementa: our biennial contemporary arts festival. Two favourite things to do are: walking up Mount Combemelong (a.k.a Coomber Melon) to take in the view, and, in the main street, browsing for second-hand treasures at the Community Charity Shop. Henbury, our 18-hole golf course, is popular with experienced players who like an interesting green, and a great place for a morning walk (mountain views and kangaroos). Over the road from the golf course is Kandos Pool (divine and 50m). Eating out for lunch you could book for yum cha in Rylstone at 29NINE99, or Naked Lady Wines, between Rylstone and Kandos. We also recommend booking a wine tasting at both of our excellent local cellar doors ... see our Guidebook for details. Kandos shops are a short walking distance down the road. We're at the quieter end of the main street (just up from IGA supermarket). At the busier end of the avenue you'll find the pharmacy, post office, baker, craft shops, community shop, haberdashery ... and the Golden Mile Cafe (good coffee and burgers). A walking and cycling path takes you to Rylstone (7 km), and for an outdoor adventure contact Southern Cross Kayaking and spend a day exploring Ganguddy Dunns Swamp in Wollemi National Park. Next door to where you are staying, neighbour Shawn (Kandos Cycle Hub) can hire you a bicycle or e-bike and recommend a tour. We recommend planning a couple of days of activities around Kandos and Rylstone. Further afield, Mudgee's wineries and food offerings are a scenic 45-minute drive away. See our Guidebook for local recommendations. If you would like to book for two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, please see our separate listing. Each bathroom has a shower; no bathtub. The front door is on the main street, and the apartment up one flight of stairs. No TV. Also, the apartment has a fridge but no freezer. Kandos has a similar climate to Canberra: summer days can be very hot but Kandos generally cools down overnight. Autumn and spring are delightful, with cooler mornings and warm afternoons, perfect weather for walking. Winter is chilly but our sunny apartment has double-glazed windows, reverse-cycle heating/air-conditioning, and the beds have electric blankets.
