South Cottage, Orton is a 2 bedroom cottage situated 6 miles from The Lake District National Park and nestled within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Orton itself is very popular and is situated on the famous Coast to Coast route. It has two cafes, a chocolate shop, a monthly farmers market, a village post office and a lovely village pub! The cottage is really cosy, pet-friendly and has super-fast WiFi. It has everything you could possibly need to make your stay welcoming, cosy and fun! Whether you are an avid walker, an energetic cyclist, a family seeking a touring holiday or a writer relishing the opportunity for a calm, peaceful break, your stay in South Cottage is one you are unlikely to forget. The cottage has been beautifully presented throughout and has been designed to cater for all your needs - even down to the courtesy picnic hamper for those summer walks! Right in the heart of the village, South Cottage has Orton’s hidden treasures within a few steps of the front door. From the popular village pub with regular quizzes and events, the famous Kennedy’s Chocolate Factory (we dare you not to venture in!), the village post office and stores with well-stocked shelves and, for real foodies, the monthly Farmers Market, there really is something for everyone. On market morning, open the windows of the cottage and a waft of hot dogs, chestnuts and seasonal offerings fill the air. Orton is a favourite location for walkers, and forms part of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk. Wainwright himself described Orton as ‘one of the loveliest of Westmorland’s villages, a pretty, rural settlement built around a central green with two streams crossed by many footbridges and having numerous venerable buildings and a fine church on a hill overlooking tranquil countryside.’ With stunning local walks including the majestic Howgill Fells and Orton Scar, what will delight the walker, cyclist and driver alike is the wide range of scenery that surrounds the village. From picture-postcard charm, barren and dramatic expanses of limestone terrain to the gentle rolling hills and sheep grazing innocently by the roadside, Orton is truly blessed with a variety of landscapes. Despite all of this, Orton revels in its relatively undiscovered existence and keeps its beauty a secret – away from the hustle and bustle of the central lakes crowds. In the cottage, there is ample hanging and floor space for muddy boots (and paws), coats and rucksacks in the external porch. There is a stylish and separate kitchen which guests comment is very well equipped and features views across the village to the pub! The living room has wooden effect flooring throughout, a sofa, two modern arm chairs, a utility cupboard housing a fridge/freezer, a gorgeous table with seating for four, and the all important open fire. There is also a lovely inviting hallway with feature shelving, housing a wide range of literature. We've provided lots of books on the local area, guided walks and maps for you to use during your stay, plus plenty of board games and DVD's (from family ones to thrillers) for those rainy days or cosy evenings. The cottage has an attractive and quirky bathroom with lovely deep bath, electric shower over and additional hand held mixer tap over, plus plenty of storage for toiletries. The master bedroom is small but cosy and stylish! Inheriting a slightly awkward angle makes furnishing the bedrooms difficult, but we think the mixture of solid oak chest of drawers, matching bedside table and double bed with drawer storage underneath, plus a deep built in wardrobe with rail hanging make up for the lack of space! The second bedroom is bright and airy with plenty of storage - a built in cupboard with hanging space, under drawers in the single bed, a wicker rack of drawers and bedside table. A stone outbuilding provides space for you to stow away your bikes or other equipment as you require. The cottage also comes with a lovely rear patch of garden and a table with a bench - ideal for soaking up the evening sunlight and having a glass of wine in the open air. There is also a front garden which is less private but provides a view of the village – ideal for being nosey and watching life go by! There is allocated parking for one car, but there is also plenty of on-street parking just outside in the village. Please note that access to the double bed in the master is only from one side, so most suitable for the nimble. Sadly, dogs aren't allowed off the lead on the premises as the garden is not fully enclosed and is situated in a communal area. The front garden is lovely and only for the house, but it isn't fenced, so is unsuitable for dogs off a lead. I operate a self check in and check out system but I live locally and am available when needed. Orton is nestled within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and yet is situated just six miles away from the Lake District border. The area is famous for lakes and mountains and stunning scenery, and Orton is certainly no exception. Even Scotland's only a half an hour away! There is so much to do in the area, that we're only scratching the surface, but the cottage has a large pack of leaflets for numerous things to do - from walking, horse-riding, golf, cycling, watersports, art galleries, boat cruises, historical houses, family days out. You won't have enough time to do it all! Orton village has a Post Office with a newsagents - where you can buy food, logs for the fire, newspapers, sweets etc. Kennedy's Chocolate factory is a definite must-see and only a few steps from the cottage door. As well as a large cafe, there are lots of lovely gift-ideas, sculptured chocolates and novelty items. The Farmers market is on the 2nd Saturday of every month and has a whole host of interesting foods, cheeses and wine. The smell of hot dogs and bacon baps wafts across to the cottage as the market is situated a few yards away! The George Hotel is a lovely, welcoming village pub - a popular stop over for people doing Wainwright's coast to coast walk. There are a large range of ales, food, regular activities and pub quizzes etc. There is private guest parking for one vehicle next to the cottage. Parking is also free and plentiful around the village.
