Wanderers Cottage - A Slice of Paradise in Woodbridge Tasmania WANDERER’S COTTAGE Our tranquil, warm one-bedroom cottage set in the heart of a 1000-tree, 12-hectare olive grove at beautiful Woodbridge, 40 minutes-drive south of Hobart in the stunning Channel district, has undergone a magical transformation from top to toe. Almost entirely rebuilt, this turn of the century cottage, once a neglected and unloved tack shed on the farm, still maintains its original footprint and olde-world charm. As part of the renovation, we rescued the old stable door from near-destitution and returned it to its original glory; and it is that door that we now invite you to walk through … A private and romantic sanctuary, Wanderer’s Cottage is a sun-drenched, serene space that is a perfect getaway for a couple who want to discover this glorious part of the world, or who wish to do nothing but breathe the pure Tasmanian air, doze on the wooden deck overlooking the olive grove, chat to the ducks that cheekily waddle up from the dam or climb the hill that winds through the grove and from where, at the summit you can take a seat, have a glass of vino or two and watch the ferries weave their way across the D’Entrecasteaux Channel to Bruny Island . Tasmania, our ancient little island on the edge of the world showcases the best in fresh food, fabulous wine and spectacular scenery and Woodbridge – our unspoiled, quaint little village that is one of Australia’s oldest country towns - is the star of the show. Reached by winding country roads that snake past the Channel, this lovely town is lost in time. And here, on our olive grove, surrounded by stunning wildlife – a rare parrot, wallabies, wombats, geese and ducks and greeted by our sweet-natured, wag-tail Border Collie, Sam – you will be lost in time, too. On a full moon, which bathes the Channel in a soft, candescent glow, even the brightest lights of a brash big city dim in comparison. Host to bewitching rainbows of iridescent hues, Woodbridge is one of the last places on the planet where the bush and sky kiss and where the countryside holds you in a warm embrace. An easy stroll down the hill from the cottage is the ever-popular Peppermint Bay Hotel, accessible by car or ferry from Hobart, the Woodbridge Smokehouse, famed for its smoked trout and salmon, the general store, which boasts the best expresso coffee in Tassie, the monthly Woodbridge market, where the locals show off their wares and Grandview Cheesery, renowned for its range of tasty ewe milk cheeses and its award-winning Vodka and Gin. So, now we’ve seduced you to our tiny piece of paradise – take our hand as we walk you through Wanderer’s Cottage. THE SPACE Spotlessly clean, with high-quality appliances, furniture, bedding and crockery, the warm and welcoming interior reflects our love of design. Here, nothing has been left to chance, both inside and out. The origins of the name, Wanderer’s Cottage holds a special significance for us, which we will share with you when you arrive … It’s a heart-warming story. KITCHEN We have chosen not to install a cooktop and oven in the kitchen as there are so many fabulous places to dine in/take away in Hobart and the Channel. We provide a list of some of these to our guests once a booking is secured. We do provide a microwave oven to reheat food you purchase, and there is also a BBQ on the deck. A toaster, kettle, sandwich maker, electric frypan and fridge are on hand for you to make a sumptuous breakfast and basics such as salt, pepper, tea, coffee and, of course, our famous Woodbridge Grove olive oil are staples in the pantry. THE KITCHEN TABLE This beautiful antique Cedar table has hosted many a dinner party and a thousand laughs. We rescued it from an antique emporium in Cygnet where it was dusty, lonely and crying out for a home. Make her welcome! Eat, drink, laugh, enjoy! You have time at Woodbridge to relax … BEDROOM A super-comfortable Queen size mattress and luxurious bedding and pillows ensures you will sleep as snug as a bug in a rug. There is an electric blanket on the bed to keep you warm on our famously chilly winter nights or, if you prefer, you can snuggle down with a hot water bottle, just like Granny used to use … Either way, you’ll be warm and happy. LOUNGEROOM French doors open from the lounge/kitchen/dining area onto the deck, your own private space overlooking the grove. Curl up under woollen rugs on the gorgeous white leather couches and read books which sit on the antique wooden bench we use as a coffee table, watch television or just do nothing but rest and dream … THE BATHROOM Beautifully spacious, you can stand in the walk-in shower and look out through the specially-fitted windows to see the grove and sky. Please note: we are on tank water – fresh, pure, gifted by rainfall - and whilst nature is abundant, we can’t fill up the tank once it’s empty. So, we ask you please, go gently on its use: nature thanks you and so do we. CHILDREN The cottage can accommodate one child, pre-crawling age only. We need to be mindful of a child’s safety because of the dam … HEATING During our cold winter months, when our magnificent Mount Wellington slips on her white, snowy coat, early-morning mist ghosts through the olive grove and fog blankets the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in a surreal and beautiful haze, you will need to turn on the heaters! The cottage is fully insulated and there is a gas heater in the kitchen/lounge and panel heaters in the bathroom/bedroom to ensure you will be toasty warm throughout your stay. MUDROOM There’s a mud-room at the cottage front door where you can borrow an umbrella, gumboots and wet-weather jackets to entice you to get into the outdoors – go on, do it - it’s glorious! CARPARK … is so accessible to the cottage, you can virtually drive into the loungeroom. THE BIG BANG THEORY At the cottage and on the grounds, you won’t hear a car, a truck or any other jarring noise to disturb your blissful peace; but you may, occasionally notice the silence is broken by a loud banging noise, sometimes at night. Don’t be alarmed: it’s simply a pine cone abandoning its nesting place in the 150-year old pine tree outside the cottage and falling onto the roof to say hello. THE PRIVATE RESIDENCE We live on the olive grove in the main residence. The gorgeous grounds with the mesmerising view overlooking the Channel and the main house are totally separate from the cottage. We will respect your privacy in the Cottage and understand that you will offer us the same. Please feel free to wander around the olive grove and dam and explore up the hill where the views are breathtaking. However, as much as we pride ourselves on being extremely welcoming hosts, we do not offer the use of our private grounds, nor our deck to guests, and we thank you for your understanding. Many of our guests like to bring a bike, although it is hilly the channel highway is relatively flat and the views are lovely.
