PLEASE NOTE: The Pool and it’s incorporated Hot Tub are closed for the season from Mid October until Mid June. Stowebury Guest House is a charming and private cottage with a country/mid-century vibe on a half acre lot in the historic and quiet hamlet of Nichols in the town of Trumbull, CT. Every detail has been thought out in this small, but well furnished and surprisingly spacious 350 sq. ft cottage. The house is just far enough away from the main house and is very private. We designed and architected this house ourselves, and it took over a few years to design and build. The overall concept of the design started with the red metal fireplace that is in the center of the space. The house was basically built around it. We were obsessed with having plenty of natural light and we got it! There is natural light even in the shower and WC! Instead of buying new, we chose to use (and restore) windows and doors that we have collected through the years from demolitions. No need to fill up more landfills! The eyebrow windows are especially unique and are antique. Atop the cupola on the roof is a nod to our dear departed West Highland Terrier: "Jed" who loved this space in the yard. A hand hammered copper weathervane with 24 carat gold collar, engraved "Jed". Even though you can't really see it, It is one of the many design details built into the house. At night, there is every electric light imaginable: overhead, task, mood, etc. The porch is either lighted by carriage lights, or by down lights. The queen size bed is extremely comfortable, with a pillow top mattress and 464 thread count sheets. Both down and poly pillows are provided. A large flatscreen TV with cable lives next to the bed, but swivels for viewing from any part of the studio. Original fine art, vintage art, and vintage objects are used throughout. Adjacent to the living space is a kitchenette with microwave, full size dishwasher, mini fridge and sink (which is part of an antique hotel kitchenette). A large kitchen counter serves as either an eating area, or work space. For coffee or tea, a Keurig machine, and hot pot are available, and we have provided a selection of teas and coffee complimentary. The bathroom is very large, and was designed as an amalgamation of all of the many hotels we have enjoyed through the years. We love honed marble and subway tile and used neutral colors to offset all of the other brighter accent colors of the interior. There is no shower door- which adds to the illusion of more space- and don't worry, the shower is huge, and with a bench, so you won't be splashing water all over the place. Water cascades from the ceiling from a rainfall shower head, or a conventional hand held shower head with massage functions. The toilet is located in a separate room for additional privacy. Guests have access to the guest house and the pool area. This is a large area that is completely fenced in due to zoning laws and gates must be closed and "pool locked" at all times (and for hundreds of years this was a deer run...we don't need them strolling about while you are sunbathing!) NOTE: Pool and it’s incorporated hot tub usually closes mid October or sooner depending on weather. You'll have your own parking space (let us know if you need two), and your own private gated entrance. We try to do things like landscaping and what not when you are out and about. Generally, you will not see us. We do allow a small dog with pre approval from us. They must be well behaved, house broken, 20lbs or less, and preferably hypoallergenic (non shedding). ***Please! We do not host parties, gatherings, photo or film shoots of any number of people. Thank you. ***Please note: due to Covid-19 situation and the extensive cleaning that is required we are unable to grant requests of early check-in or late check-out*** We live in the main house and are generally always around to help if need be. We provide contact information if you need to get a hold of us right away. Sometimes we do need to enter the guest house for various reasons (internet, water, gas line, etc.) but will always let you know in advance. The neighborhood of Nichols is on the historic register and located on the land that was once Nichols farms- one of the earliest farms in the United States. Most of the houses on the main street that lead to our house are from the early to mid 1800's. There is also one from the late 1600's, and many in the neighborhood from the 1700's. We fell in love with the neighborhood when our real estate agent took us down this street. There is a community center, library and churches in our little "square" which is actually a triangle. On Thursdays during the summer there is a small Farmer's Market with food trucks and other local goods, and is walking distance from the house. This area has not changed much in the past few hundred years. Wildlife does strolls through and around our neighborhood: Wild turkeys, deer, bunnies, all sorts of beautiful birds, owls...and always squirrels and chipmunks. Very occasionally there is a bear...we get alerts from the town when this happens and will alert you. Bears are not your friend. Do not leave food outside. Our house was built in 1930. So, it's "new". If you enjoy early American architecture and the bucolic Connecticut landscape, you will love this neighborhood! If you are lucky, you will even see an antique Good Humor Ice Cream truck and still sells ice cream on the street. If you are doing business or pleasure in NYC, the Bridgeport or Fairfield Metro train stations are only about a 10 minute drive. You can get to NYC on Metro North RR dropping you off at Grand Central Terminal in about an hour and a half. If you want a less "commuter style" way to train in, Amtrak also runs from Bridgeport on the Regional Line- Amtrak has a food car with snacks and cocktails (it's also perfectly fine to drink your bottle of wine or beer on MTA.) Amtrak goes all the way to DC, and stops in NYC, with only one stop at Stamford. It will bring you to Penn Station and there are easy links there to any part of the city. If you fly into Newark, there also is an easily accessible Amtrak station there. There is parking available at both Bridgeport and at Fairfield Metro for a fee at several lots. We can provide directions and instructions. Sacred Heart University is about a 15 minute drive from us on the Merritt Parkway as is Fairfield U. Yale and New Haven is about a half hour away driving, and about 15 minutes away taking the train north. The Merritt Parkway is the only parkway with a historic designation and is only a few minutes from us. It is super duper pretty, but only two lanes, so if there is road work, or an accident...bank in that commute time. "The 95" is also a short distance away-only about 5 minutes driving. This will take you all the way to Boston, or all the way down to Miami. For those who are working in Norwalk, Greenwich or Stamford allow about 45 minutes driving. The MTA can also take you to any of those stops (and more.) Uber and Lyft serve Fairfield Country and are easy to get. Trumbull is a bedroom community. We do have a few "nightlife" spots (aka Bars) and a few restaurants. For a more vibrant evening out, while staying with us, Fairfield, and Milford (next towns over) are your best bet, with lots of choices and a younger vibe as all the college kids are out. The Long Island Sound and the CT beaches are close by and easy to get to. The Bridgeport/Port Jefferson Ferry (takes cars too) to Long Island (Port Jefferson) is also at the Bridgeport Transportation Facility and is a very nice ride across the sound if you plan of visiting the Hamptons or other areas of Long Island. It's only an hour and fifteen minute ride, and on Sunny days you can rock your tan on the upper deck. They have a bar on board, food, sodas and snacks (quite possibly, and strangely, they have the BEST French Fries EVER.) Doggies are welcome too- but they like them out on the deck (the crew on board turns a blind eye on inside doggies when the weather is bad, or if you have a tiny one that doesn't like "outiside.") Please note: we receive numerous requests for parties, events, gatherings, film shoots, music videos, etc. we are flattered by these requests, unfortunately we cannot honor these requests. Please do not ask, we do not make exceptions. Pool use is restricted to only the two people staying in the pool house as documented on the reservation. *Pool will be closed from November 1st until early June*
