Verbania is equidistant (about 30 kilometers) from the Swiss border, the Ossola mountains (interesting ski area) and Lake Orta. A place of great naturalistic and landscape charm that also includes the Valgrande National Park, the largest wilderness area in Italy. WHAT SEE Isola Bella is part of the archipelago of the Borromean Islands; about 400 meters off the coast of Stresa, it is reachable in a few minutes by boat from the piers of Verbania, Pallanza, Baveno, Stresa and Arona. The island is a real natural pearl that the human hand has made even more precious; has always been one of the favorite destinations in the area of Lake Maggiore and an essential destination for all those who want to enjoy a view from the indescribable charm. Dominating the island is its beautiful baroque palace, flanked by a luxuriant Italian garden 37 meters high and set on ten descending terraces. Many areas of the palace are open to visitors: richly furnished rooms and luxurious lounges enriched with priceless works of art. In the garden there are very rare exotic flowers and plants, whose growth is allowed by the particularly mild climate of the Borromean Gulf. The stupendous and vast garden is further embellished by pools, fountains and a multitude of statues dating back to the second half of the seventeenth century. The white peacocks, free to turn on the velvety meadows, contribute to the enchanting charm of the place. Close to the palace and the gardens remains part of the pre-existing village, where there are some typical restaurants and small shops. Equally interesting are the other islands: Fishermen and Mother The gardens of Villa Taranto, 2 km away, located in Verbania, between Intra and Pallanza, are known all over the world for their beauty and for the richness of floral species that they host. Result of the laborious elaboration undertaken by Captain Mc Eacharn in 1931, these gardens with a thousand shades of color and a thousand heady fragrances give marvelous floral scenery to visitors from March to November. The blooms follow each other from spring to autumn, a period in which special events are organized to pay homage to these small but intense wonders of nature such as the tulip week, from the second week of April to the end of the month, during this period the garden lights up of the thousand colors of over 80,000 bulbous plants in bloom, among which the tulip is the undisputed protagonist. Spectacular maze of tulips where more than 65 varieties are planted with 20,000 corollas in bloom, among which we can admire the sought-after black tulip Queen of night and the imposing Big Chief, with a corolla diameter of almost 10 centimeters. The Victoria Cruziana in flower, from 20 June to the end of October, queen of the aquatic plants native to the areas of the great river basins of South America (Rio delle Amazzoni, Paranà). Since 1956 it has found its natural habitat in the Serra of the Botanical Gardens of Villa Taranto, where, in the periods of greatest vegetative activity of the plant (June - July), the leaves reach 2 meters in diameter. The flowering of dahlias, from July to October, fascinates and enchants visitors in the Labyrinth of Dahlias with a show of over 1700 flowering plants subdivided into over 350 varieties, in a play of colors, sizes and shapes, which have no comparison with any ' other floral essence and the Publishing and Gardens event in September. The creation of this magnificent place was the work of the Scottish captain Neil Mac Eacharn, who bought the villa in 1931 with the precise ambition of creating a dream garden on the shores of the beloved Lake Maggiore. The name given to him pays homage to a family ancestor made duke of Taranto by Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1939 the captain Mac Eacharn, not having direct heirs, decided to donate the entire property to the Italian State, obtaining in exchange the permission to be buried in the mausoleum located in the middle of the park. Entrance to the gardens is subject to charges. Villa Giulia in Pallanza 2 km away Opening period: from March 19th to November 2nd. The history of Villa Giulia is closely linked to the events of the Branca family. The building was built in 1847 by Bernardino Branca, the inventor of Fernet. His son decided to dedicate his residence to his wife Giulia and extended the property to the lake, but a first containment structure collapsed ruinously in 1879 dragging with it a grandiose staircase whose remains are still visible in the dry periods at the bottom of the lake. Later Cavalier Branca entrusted the Milanese architect Giuseppe Pirovano with the drafting of the project for the reorganization of the property. Initially, an imposing entrance gate and a dock were built, above which a terrace with a pergola and a garden was arranged, arranged following the dictates of the English style, in which also artificial caves were added. Further changes were made with the extension, about ten meters, of the facade facing the lake, decorated with loggias and columns on all floors and the construction of a circular terrace above. In 1904 Giulia, widowed and remarried with Count Melzi d'Eril, introduced elements of Art Nouveau style in the interior decorations. In December 1932, Villa Giulia was purchased by the Autonomous Hospital of Care, Stay and Tourism in order to provide the city with a Municipal Casino and a more detailed "Foreigner's House". Villa Giulia thus became the Kursaal, expanded in 1955 with the creation of two large halls, a basement and accessible from the garden and the other placed at the level of the main floor, to be dedicated to conferences, exhibitions and concerts. In 1959 the dock was also transformed in order to obtain premises. This intervention involves the elimination of artificial caves and made the dock impracticable during periods of lake flooding. In 1987 the Piedmont Region ordered the transfer of ownership to the Municipality of Verbania. It is now home to the Current Art Research Center, regularly hosting exhibitions and exhibitions.
