Family Farmhouse in Central Scotland
This beautiful stone farmhouse is ideal for a family get away or a group of friends looking for lovely long walks or cycling. Located in the Kelvin Valley in Central Scotland, where it is close to the historic Antonine Wall and Forth Clyde canal. It also provides easy access to the historic sights of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling. Riskend Farmhouse is located on the south facing hillside overlooking the Kelvin Valley. A beautiful traditional stone farmhouse built in 1806, it has plenty of history as a well loved family home. It offers a large, fully equipped, kitchen dining room with double oven, hob, microwave, dish washer, fridge and freezer. As well as the kitchen dining room there is sitting room with wood burning stove and a large laundry for hanging and storing outdoor clothing and footwear. Accommodation consists of 3 bedrooms, 1 with double bed and 2 twin rooms, one of which can be converted into a king size bed. There are 2 bathrooms (one with bath and separate shower, one with shower). All bedrooms have a southerly view across the Kelvin valley. Guests will have full access to the garden immediately in front of the farmhouse, including the arbor and outdoor furniture. Whilst the rest of the garden is not generally available guests are welcome to request access for a wander. Any guests with young children should be aware of a pond in the extended garden and advised to educate children accordingly, or supervise at all times. Whilst guests will be left to enjoy the farmhouse and garden, I live on site next door, and will usually be available to give advice or recommendations if required. I will of course be contactable if there are any problems during your stay. The property is situated near the foot of the Kilsyth Hills, giving many walks and cycles routes either from the house itself or within a short drive. The Antonine Wall is nearby alongside the Forth Clyde Canal which runs east to the Falkirk Wheel, then Edinburgh, and west towards Glasgow. Situated next to the farm is the Colzium Lennox Estate which is a public park, with a walled garden and play area. There is a selection of brochures and maps in the house for inspiration! The house is a 20 minute walk away from Kilsyth town centre, which has bakery, butcher shops and a fishmonger, as well as a chemist. There is also a Lidl and Coop in Kilsyth, as well as a large Tesco a 15 minute drive away. There is a doctors and dental surgery in Kilsyth, should you be unlucky enough to need this on your holiday. There is a swimming pool and a pub with restaurant. There are several good restaurants within a short drive. Take away food can be ordered, though collection is recommended. The nearest train station is Croy which is a short drive away and a taxi from Croy to Riskend is approximately £6-8. Trains can be taken directly to Edinburgh (40 mins), Glasgow (20 mins) or Stirling (25 mins) from here. There are several each hour. There are also buses, but these will take considerably longer. Driving will take only a little longer into the city centres and there is generally plenty of parking, though this can be expensive. There are also park and ride options which have free parking and you pay for the return bus or tram. Please note that as we come out of lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic we are restricted as to how many guests we can accommodate, as follows: From 26th April 2021 we are in level 3 and all overnight guests must be from the same household, regardless of numbers. From 17th May to 7th June, if all goes according to plan and we move into level 2 then we can accommodate to up to 2 households, but only 4 guests in total overnight (children under 12 do not count towards the total). From 7th June, if we then move into level 1, we hope to be able to accommodate up to 3 households, and 6 guests in total. We will update these details when there is new information. There may also be the added complication of where you are travelling from! If in doubt please message Mary-Ann with details of your guests for clarification before booking.
