Monpazier is a Bastide (fortified) town built in the 13th Century during the 100 Years War against England. It still has the original village layout, beautiful architecture, a large square where there is a lively Thursday market, cafes, excellent restaurants, delicious local cuisine. Canoe on the Dordogne River, walk in the countryside, enjoy the medieval history (you'll be living in it!) explore the troglodyte habitations in nearby cliffs, visit castles and vineyards. Check out (Website hidden by Airbnb) for a personal web guide. Monpazier is accessed by car, or taxi, and you will need a car to explore the local area. Cars can be rented from e.g. Bergerac airport or station, 40 minutes drive, or Bordeaux, 21/2 hours drive, Toulouse 21/2 hours drive. If you are flying into Lyon try renting a car and driving slowly across France to Monpazier. Highly recommended, just magic. The village itself is small and you can walk around with ease. The house is not suitable for young children or people with a disability because there are stairs. Shopping - village shops can provide everything you need. Guests have the whole property. Guests have complete privacy but can contact the house manager who lives next door if they have any queries or problems. I can be contacted by text or email at any time. Monpazier is close to castles, prehistoric caves with amazing art, the Dordogne River for canoeing or picnicking, excellent cycling routes, walking routes that can be as long or short as wanted - there are walking maps at the house. Monpazier is very close to other medieval Bastide towns and villages to explore, and not far from the stunning medieval town of Sarlat. There is no public transport to Monpazier so a car or bicycle is essential. The area is a well known bikers’ heaven! There is no problem with parking in the village, and local roads are excellent. There is a house book in English, French and Italian which is a comprehensive guide to the house and surrounding area.
