Voisines is a small and tranquil rural village at the base of gently sweeping cultivated hills on the edge of the Champagne area of the Yonne region of Burgundy. Like our house, many buildings date back hundreds of years. Home to a few dozen families, there is a family-run bar/ bistro with daily bread deliveries and Post Office. Spring / summer weekends there are the annual village brocantes in many of the nearby Yonne towns and villages (Voisines brocante is usually the second Sunday in June) - these are French-style car-boot sales, great for bargain hunters. For car rally fans, the annual 'course de cote' hill-climb is held in Voisines in early May. The Roman and Medieval riverside town of Sens is just 10 mins by car or less than half an hour by local bus. We like to shop at the twice-weekly market which offers a fabulous selection of local Burgundian foods (do try the Yonne cheeses: Delice, Chaource, Epoisses and Soumaintrain and mouth-watering gougères savoury choux pastries). Sens cathedral was the first to be built in Gothic style and houses an impressive treasury; adjacent museum and art gallery. Sens has a range of restaurants and cafes, including Michelin starred, a municipal swimming pool complex, parks and riverside. Bike rental is available from Sens tourist office. An impressive Go-kart circuit is 3 miles away from Voisines in the village of Soucy; horse riding is also nearby. Enjoy lake & river bathing at either Paisey-Cosdon or Villeneuve sur Yonne (both are only 20-30 mins) and at Foret d'Orient near Troyes (60 mins). Visit the famous Champagne and Chabilis vineyards. Walking or cycling around and beyond Voisines, to the forest and nearby villages is easy and peaceful. The French network of mapped pathways is great for walkers and details may be found elsewhere. Voisines has a limited local bus service into Sens which is on a major trainline: there are frequent direct trains from Sens to Paris (55 mins+ Gare de Bercy and Gare du Lyons), Dijon (2 hours) and the South of France. Car rental is available in Sens, including Avis (will leave vehicle for you to collect from the train station) and Europcar. By car there are many places to visit. Enjoy meandering through some of the Yonne's other picturesque villages, or head for local historical and cultural centres like Sens (10 mins), Troyes (c.40 mins), Provins (c.40 mins ), Fontainbleu (c.50mins), Noyers (1hr 20m), Vezelay (1 hr 40). For outdoor entertainment drive to the Foret d'Orient (lakes, bathing c.60mins), or Disneyland Paris (1hr 30mins). The Channel Tunnel is approximately 4 hours by car.
