Puivert is a charming village, set in a panoramic setting, with its own lake complete with its own small beach ideal for taking a swim on a hot summers day. The lakeside is home to the local Buvette (bar and informal dining), and in the summer, the weekly night market is held where you can buy all manner of food, wines and beers, and eat at the long communal tables whilst listening to live music - twice in the summer there are unforgettable fireworks displays, set to music, extraordinary for a village of Puivert's size. This is a great base to explore the beauty, history, myths and legends of Cathar country (made famous by the books of Kate Mosse and Dan Brown) exploring the local vineyards, Cathar castles or taking a pleasant stroll through gentle rolling countryside. Above Puivert is the Plateau Du Sault, just 15 mins away, but feeling like you have been transported to the France of long ago, with its majestic Pyreneean views, huge forests and meadows, ideal for spotting local flora and fauna either on foot, bicycle or by car. For the more adventurous, try white water rafting, canyoning, rock climbing, mountain biking and hill walking. Or take a glider flight from Puivert and soar over mountains, lakes and villages. Then all come together for a trip to the Mediterranean to enjoy all the delights at places such as Collioure (intimate, loved by artists and truly beautiful), the extensive sandy beaches and water sports activities. Carcassonne Cite (UNESCO world heritage site) is just 1 hour away, and is one of the "must do" days out, with its incredible fortifications on a scale rarely seen, and is a wonderful venue for eating out - it also hosts an annual summer music festival with a wide variety of music tastes catered for. Although a car is very useful, there is bus and train facilities at Quillan about 15 mins drive away, and a taxi can take you to and from Quillan. It is possible to pay just 1 euro for a trip to Carcassonne or Perpignan, or the many villages in between. A recent addition to the Village is a micro brewery with a bar, run by a local English couple, which hosts live music and shows big sporting events when they are on. In addition to the lakeside Buvette, there are 3 other restaurants within a very short walk, and a small shop for your groceries and bread.
