Peaceful waterfront retreat
The house is right on the edge of the water on a small peaceful island. I built this place a couple of years ago as a writing retreat. You can see the water from almost every part of the house. Watching the tide go in and out does something deeply restful to body and soul. At high tide, the water comes right up the edge of the mangroves less than five metres away. At night, you'll hear the lapping of small waves while you sleep. There are two bedrooms with a double bed in each. There is a U shaped deck that looks over the water and has an outside couch that turns into another bed. There's a large L shaped lounge in the main area that also works as a bed if needed. The house is open-plan with a small office off the main bedroom, the kitchen and lounge all loosely connected. The whole upper level of the house is yours. I hope you enjoy it. It's a beautiful space to rest in and restore mind and body. I will either be travelling or staying in a flat underneath the house. You will have complete privacy and solitude but are welcome to call on me if you need help with anything. There’s a swimming enclosure and also a bowls club, both within walking or bike riding distance. The club is pretty basic but the beer and food are cheap. In summer there can be mosquitos at dawn and dusk (the island is surrounded by mangroves), but the house is high set and fully screened, so generally they're not a problem. I have repellent (both non-toxic and fully toxic) on hand if needed. The birdlife is amazing. I've never been much of a bird watcher, but it's hard to miss them here. There are swamp pheasants, egrets, ibis, kookaburras, pelicans, parrots, galahs and lots of curlews. The island's also on the migration path for a heap of other birds whose names I don't know. But they're very pretty! There's very little traffic on the island and the birds (and one old lady) tend to wander over the road in a very leisurely fashion. If you bring a car, try not to run them over. If you wanted to bring your car with you, there is a barge that runs every hour until 10pm, and costs roughly $120 return. The passenger ferry runs from Redland Bay marina all day until late. You can use your GoCard or pay cash (tickets are about $10 cash). Travel on the ferries between the islands is free. Karragarra island is a five minute ferry ride away and has a nice sandy beach and is a lovely spot for a day trip. Macleay and Russell both have supermarkets, cafes and pubs. I have three bicycles that you are very welcome to use while you’re on the island. Walking is lovely too. The island is small - roughly one kilometre by two. There’s almost no traffic. There is a small convenience store on the island but no supermarket so it’s a good idea to bring whatever you need with you. If you’re staying for a long time, Woolworths do deliver three times a week. I don't have a television. I have lots of books which you're very welcome to read. Or the wifi is good, too, if you have an ipad.
