Historic former village Gendarmerie
In a rural working village, our Gite (semi detached house) is part of the former village Gendarmerie (circa 1850). Recently refurbished, 3 star Meuble de Tourisme and 2 Key CleVacances ratings. Our stylish, comfortable accommodation offers you a holiday in an historic building with garden, terrace and off road parking. The village has 2 bars, a restaurant open at lunchtime weekdays, boulangerie, dairy shop . The nearby town, 10 km away has restaurants, shops, banks, pharmacies and supermarket. The old Gendarmerie is dog friendly, having a fully enclosed garden ( as it was also a prison), so your dog(s) is welcome but only dogs no other pets. We still have the prison cells but not as accommodation! Situated on the borders of Deux Sevres and the Vendee midway between La Rochelle airport and Poitiers airport we are ideally situated for exploring the many tourist attractions of the Poitou-Charente and nearby Loire Valley. Such as the Marais Poitevin, Puy de Fou, Futuroscope, Valley de Singes, historic La Rochelle, Ile de Re, the Oriental Park, etc., The surrounding beautiful countryside offers extensive walking, hiking, fishing, mountain biking and off and on road motorcycling opportunities. We welcome motorcylists ( and car drivers) and can confirm that the largely traffic free roads offer hundreds of stunning kilometres of touring possibilities. Both car and motorcycle rentals are available in local towns. You can use all the gardens and grounds as well as your accomodation and we have a large dedicated terrace for guests including garden sofa and chairs with large umbrella, deck chairs and sun loungers and large dining table that seats up to 10. We are generally on hand to provide a warm welcome and assistance to you, as we live at the old Gendarmerie, to help you truly enjoy your stay. The Gendarmerie is unique in that it is the former village Gendarmerie and prison, Constructed in approximately 1850 it was active as a Gendarmerie till 1948 and retain many original historic features. It was one of the largest buildings in La Chapelle Thireuil, constructed of stone with slate roofs. Clay tile being the more common roofing for houses in the village It still retains its impressive grandeur with gated entrance and high wall all around guaranteeing privacy and seclusion. It even still has the prison cells! Extensive off road private parking on site which can be locked off if needed. There is also free street parking. There is a working commercial dairy in the village.
