A large, comfortable bedroom which is ideal for tourists and business travellers. Escape to the country in a stylish period home with views of England's highest mountain and beautiful coastline. Enjoy a touch of luxury, a five star breakfast, peace & quiet guaranteed. Guest lounge, TV, wood stove & free-standing bath after a day on the fells! Secure parking for cars & bikes, close to the station. Just ask, we'll try to make your stay great! The Old School House was built as the village school in 1823, and later became the Schoolmaster’s house in 1855, when a new school was built next door. David and Shelagh have completely renovated this Georgian property to create a cosy, welcoming home with many original features and all modern conveniences. There are beautiful views of Scawfell and Wasdale from the rear, and over Ravenglass to Black Coombe at the front. Set back from the road, it's the perfect place to chill and relax after a busy day. We are close to the Sellafield complex, and for business travellers we offer a quiet space to work, early breakfasts, and reduced rates for longer stays. No. 1 Scawfell View has a king-sized bed, and there is also a desk if you need to stay in touch with work during your stay. The large, luxurious guest bathroom has a walk-in shower and deep, freestanding bathtub. Our guest lounge has a cosy, quiet area and a sitting room with TV, DVD player and surround sound. There's a selection of books, TV, games, video and audio CDs. Feel free to enjoy the peace and quiet of the house and garden - treat the place like a home from home. It works best when you're at ease with everything so if we can help with anything please say. We love meeting people, and we're happy to chat about (almost) anything, but our prime concern is to ensure that your stay with us is relaxing and enjoyable - we'll greet you with tea, home-made cake and a smile. We can offer advice on walks and activities in the area, tell you the best places to eat and shop, or share a family meal (additional charge of £10 pp for 2 courses), but if you just want to be left alone, we will leave you to it. COVID 19 UPDATE - due to social distancing guidelines we can't offer evening meals, or the use of the lounge which is a shared space. Please wear a mask when checking-in and coming down for breakfast and comply with handwashing/sanitation/social distancing guidelines. We will cancel (with full refund) if we are required to self-isolate at any time during your stay. Drigg is a quiet village, ideal if you want to get away from tourist hotspots. There are pleasant walks from our front door, and the magnificent beach is only a few minutes away. The West Coast Rail line is spectacularly beautiful as it crosses estuaries to the south, heading for Lancaster, and clings to cliffsides to the north en route for historic Carlisle. We are close to several award-winning golf courses, freshwater and sea fishing, riding and cycle hire companies – and of course there are many miles of fells and forests to explore within a short drive. We can advise on all of these to make your stay particularly memorable. If you’re travelling by road, we are about half a mile from the A595 at Holmrook. Allow 90 minutes for the journey from the M6 at J36, Kendal. Trains run to Drigg from Barrow in Furness and Carlisle, and we will pick you up from the station. There is no year-round bus service, but we can arrange taxis from Whitehaven if you are planning on a late arrival. As we are surrounded by fields, you may from time to time be disturbed by our tame blackbird, local sparrows, chattering swallows, nosy cows looking over the wall, the occasional banter between the horse and rooster on the next door farm, and the sound of the grass growing.
