Turunc Turunç is a county accessible both by road (21 kilometres) and a sea route (5 nautical miles) from Marmaris. The land route offers spectacular views of Marmaris after climbing the serpentine roads of the İçmeler hills. Again, descending on the winding road to Turunç presents a breathtaking panorama. Meanwhile, the sea route to Turunç is also magnificent; not only is the colour of the waters a striking blue, but the landscape is rugged yet covered in greenery. The ancient city of Amos is situated one cove over from Turunç. Turunç was the first county in Muğla to be awarded a Blue Flag for its pristine waters. Accommodations to meet all kinds of needs are available, from four star hotels to quaint guesthouses. The small town offers a variety of social activities, shopping areas and markets that cater to both locals and tourists. Turunç is a peaceful and quiet settlement, and so many foreigners choose Turunç as a place to settle down. Turunç is easy to get to by “dolmush” minibuses that leave from Marmaris centre; check here for times. You may also opt for a small traditional boat departing from Marmaris, which makes for a truly enjoyable trip. Near By Amos The ancient ruins of Amos are accessible from the Asarcik hill, northwest of Kumlubuk bay. Amos dates back to the Hellenistic period, and is composed of a hillside amphitheatre, a temple and statue pedestals. Surrounded by ramparts dating back to the same time, this amphitheatre is in good condition, with its seating area, side walls and stage with three chambers. Excavations in 1948 by Prof. Bean revealed four inscriptions, which mentioned three rental contracts, thought to date back to around 200BC. There is a minibus running from Turunc to Kumlubuku which passes through Amos. Kumlubuk Kumlubük actually means “sandy cove” in Turkish, and the Kumlubük-Marmaris road that passes through Turunç is 26 kilometres long. Kumlubük is known for its pristine waters, fine beaches, and spectacular landscape. Trekking opportunities are also enjoyable for those who wish to get know the area better. Recently, a cave has been discovered in the vicinity, thought to be 5,000-years-old. It lies in a south-easterly direction and is rather surprising in structure. Its entrance measures about 4 metres, and there are galleries, stalagmites and stalactites in it. Since it is a new discovery, scientific surveys have not been conducted yet, and it is not found in any publications. Kumlubük has exclusive restaurants and hotels for select guests. It is also one of the stopover points for daily trips both by sea and by land Icmeler İçmeler is a vacation haven 8 kilometres from Marmaris that has developed a lot in recent years, and has an abundance of accommodation choices, fine sandy beaches, shops and quality holiday facilities. The county almost leans against hills covered with pines, and a canal runs through it; walking alongside the canal is very pleasant. The sea here is quite shallow, the bay is pristine and beautiful, and all kinds of water sports are available. There are also scuba-diving courses for those interested. İçmeler Park marks the entrance of İçmeler and is similar to a botanical garden; “Arts Street” immediately behind the park perhaps best epitomizes how residents approach life. Examples of traditional handicrafts, lace, giftware or the works of local painters can be seen displayed throughout this street. Reaching İçmeler is easy by “dolmush” minibuses that leave from Marmaris centre; check here for times. Going to İçmeler via regular boats departing from Marmaris is also very enjoyable. Marmaris Town Centre A coastal town with a glorious Mediterranean climate, Marmaris is surrounded by intricate inlets and jutting promontories along the shoreline. It was a sleepy sponging and fishing village until the 1960s, when road construction began. Nature-loving campers were the first to discover Marmaris, becoming the tourism pioneers of the region. Bed-and-breakfasts, motels, hotels, and holiday resorts followed the modest campsites. The flurry of development especially in the 1980s and 1990s aimed to reach Western tourism standards. Roads were improved; the area became easy to reach via land, air and sea routes and increasingly gained popularity worldwide. Nowadays, anyone wishing to vacation in Marmaris can choose from a range of varieties, from calm coves to the bustling town centre. Marmaris is situated close to a number of ancient cities, and offers various harbours and marinas for yachting and sailing opportunities. All kinds of water sports are available along the shore, and the evenings promise good food, great entertainment, and lively nightlife. And shopping takes on many different faces in Marmaris; from shops in the bazaar to the weekly open-air market, elite jewellers to carpet dealers and leather vendors and more—there is something for everyone. Don't forget to visit Marmaris Castle and the museum inside. Local transports are called " dolmush " - minibuses runs between Turunç and Marmaris very often. Hiring a car definetly an option if you like to see surroundings like Datça, Selimiye, Bozburun, Orhaniye, Hisarönü or Akyaka. I would definetly reccomend a water taxi to Marmaris and back. Taxi is always on option. Taxi's have taxi meters so they charge fix price to locals and tourists. Make sure driver starts the meter.
