Marmara is one of the most beautiful villages of Paros. Although is not that often included in the touristic trail, it has its own unique history and cultural interest. The village was founded in the 15th century by refugees from Crete. Its name, Marmara, means marble in Greek. Big amounts of marble were found in this area and have been used for the construction of the houses and churches of the village. It is said that the ancient city of Iria is buried at the same area. Walking around the village one can admire the typical local structure with the narrow streets and the traditional white Cycladic houses and churches. Amongst the most attractive sights are the emblem of the Sommaripa family at the entrance of the village and also the churches of Taxiarchis and The Assumption with its three bell towers. Marmara is 17 kilometers away from Parikia and 10kilometers from Naousa. The closest village is Marpissa (2.5 kilometers) where you can find all kind of commodities. Near beaches are Molos, Kalogeros, Tsoukalia and Glifades.
