The Tobacco Barn: An Idyllic Countryside Getaway

The Tobacco Barn at Le Serpen is a renovated self-contained barn in the beautiful Dordogne countryside with exclusive use of a secluded pool and deck. The light and airy property is ideal for 4 adults with children (up to a maximum of 8 people). Explore the many delights of the local area: vineyards, chateaux, and markets. Or relax at the property, BBQ in the sunshine and sip a glass of wine by the pool. Or why not come for a winter break and enjoy cosy evenings by the wood burning stove? The bright and spacious property contains two bedrooms with king-size beds and en-suite shower rooms, and a large living space with a kitchen, WC and wood-burning stove. There is a double sofa bed on the sitting room mezzanine and twin beds on a mezzanine in bedroom 2. Le Serpen looks out onto the countryside with uninterrupted views across the meadow and has its own private entrance, garden and BBQ (Weber). You have exclusive access to the pool while on site and are also welcome to explore the grounds, snooze in the hammocks and play games on the lawns. The barn is completely self-contained, and guests have access to the full grounds, apart from a small garden in front of the farmhouse and the outbuildings. The converted barn adjoins the main house where my husband and I live. We are very happy to offer advice and recommendations about the local area, and can translate for you. Otherwise, we will leave you in peace to enjoy your holiday! Le Serpen is within easy reach of a myriad of tourist sites: chateaux, medieval villages and bastide towns, vineyards, caves, museums, churches, gardens - the list goes on! The famous sites of the Dordogne, including the prehistoric caves of Lascaux (1h 40 mins) and Les Eyzies (1h 30 mins), the cathedral city of Perigeux(1h 10 mins), the castle and gardens at Beynac (1hr 25 mins), Sarlat-le-Caneda (1h 45 mins) and many more, are all potential day trips by car. If you want to be active, there is canoeing and kayaking on the nearby river Dropt as well as on the Dordogne, and if you don't want to row yourself, boat trips on the Dordogne are available in Bergerac just 25 minutes drive away. Bergerac is a sizeable town with excellent shops and restaurants and a range of attractions, including an aqua park and go-karting. We are a few minutes away from a lake with cycling, walking trails and fishing (with a permit). There is a first-class 18 hole golf course at Chateau Vizier and a 9 hole course at Tombeboeuf, both 20 minutes away. Hot-air balloon rides are available from nearby vineyards. Our local village, La Sauvetat-du-Dropt, has a well-stocked shop, a bakery, a hairdresser, and a cafe and tobacconist within walking distance of the property, and there is a local food festival every Friday evening in July and August. The nearest town, Eymet (10 mins), has shops, restaurants, bars and a tourist information centre, as well as a thriving market every Thursday (and Tuesday evenings during the summer). If you are interested in wine, there are endless possibilities. St. Emilion (1h), Sauternes (1h) and Monbazillac (25m) are all within easy reach and Bordeaux is 1.5 hours away. We are close to the Bergerac wine area, with its white, rosé and red wines, including the famous Pecharmant. Our local wine is Côtes de Duras. Duras is an historic village with an impressive chateau and an excellent wine centre 17 km west of us. There are plenty of interesting towns and villages with their chateaux, markets and summer fairs all within an easy drive. Chateau Monbazillac, with its distinctive sweet wines, and the chateau Bridoire, with its furnished rooms and courtyards full of games, are both 25 minutes away. The medieval village of Issigeac, with its large Sunday market, is half an hour away. Monpazier, one of France's most beautiful villages, and the nearby chateau Biron are both a 45-minute drive. The beach resort of Arcachon, with its sand dunes, is two hours away (depending on traffic), and the famous town of Rocamadour about two hours 15 mins in the opposite direction. These suggestions merely scratch the surface of all the possible things to see and do during your stay! Bergerac airport is a 30 minute drive away, with regular flights during the summer from several European cities. Or you can fly to Bordeaux, which offers year-round flights from many cities and is 1.5 hours away. If you prefer the train, the journey from Paris to Libourne (an hour away) takes less than 3 hours. A car is necessary as there is no public transport locally. There are car rentals available at the airports and Libourne station. The local village, La Sauvetat-du-Dropt, is a 15 minute walk away. Eymet, the nearest town, is a 10-minute drive. And there are country walks you can take directly from Le Serpen. The site is not suitable for very young children to roam free: rough terrain with rock piles and an unfenced pond, well, and pool mean constant adult supervision is required. Please note that we are surrounded by agricultural land with farming activities of various sorts going on in the vicinity throughout the year. The property is not designed for groups of 8 adults.
