Lower Largo is one of the historical fishing villages that make up the East Neuk of Fife and for centuries was known for it’s catches of Haddock where net making flourished and the fisherwomen were noted for their knitting. However, Lower Largo’s main claim to fame is its connection to Robinson Crusoe, it is the birthplace of Alexander Selkirk (B.1676) who was the inspiration for Daniel Defoe’s story. A statue of Robinson Crusoe, looking out to sea has stood at the site of Selkirk’s home since 1885.
