This cosy, charming cottage sleeps 2 people, though it can accommodate 4 using the sofa-bed in the lounge. A log burner warms you in winter or in Summer enjoy relaxing in the pretty rear yard. Situated in a rural village with pub between the Lake District & Coast. With easy access to the Western Lakes & Fells as well as the more popular Lake District towns of Keswick, Windermere and Ambleside as well as the beautiful Solway Coast, Gilcrux is an ideal base to explore Cumbria whatever the weather. Rose Cottage is a cosy little cottage in the rural village of Gilcrux with one double bedroom, a sofa bed for extra guests and a woodburning stove. The cottage has no dining room but benefits from a small extendable table in the back room which can be moved into the lounge if required, bathroom with bath and separate shower and a shared, pretty rear garden. Situated in easy reach of the beautiful lakes and fells of the Western Lake District and the stunning Solway coast (AONB). Guests can enjoy a pint of real ale with a meal in the local, welcoming pubs within metres of the front door or head to the bustling Lake District towns of Cockermouth, (famous for its annual food festival & Georgian Fair) or Keswick, or the coastal towns of Maryport, Silloth or Whitehaven. You will have full use of the cottage and its shared, pretty rear garden. On-street parking is available. One fire pack will be provided to guests with more available for subsequent nights at a cost of £5.00 per fire pack, which can be pre-ordered. The property has one television and wireless internet access (please note that despite our best efforts this can be patchy). Bedding and towels are provided. Electric is included. We have a travel cot if required. We are a family of four and live close to the cottage, a little further up the village. Depending on your time of arrival We can greet you and make recommendations for your stay if you would like us to. or we can leave you entirely to your own devices and simply be on hand for any queries. Gilcrux is a lovely village and everyone makes you feel very welcome. The pub, The Mason's Arms is fantastic, serving real ale and delicious meals and only metres from the door. We have a fabulous village hall with regular events, church (St Mary's), village green and for children we have a new play park (opened June 2015 and due to be extended by Summer 2021). There is also a trout farm at the edge of the village (Gilcrux Springs Trout Farm) for visitors to enjoy an afternoon of tranquil fishing. We enjoy going for local walks as well as getting in the car for the short journey to the coast or to Buttermere. Please note that there is no public transport in the village, the nearest bus stops and train stations are approximately 2 miles away. Gilcrux is very popular with cyclists and we can offer bike storage if requested at the time of booking. On street parking is available at the front of the property. Taxi numbers can be provided if required. There is only a small shop in the village selling basic supplies but this is only open for 1 or 2 hours each morning so for self-catering purposes visitors will need to visit the local towns for food shopping or make arrangements for on-line deliveries. There is a pub serving food in the village, the Mason's Arms is open every day except Wednesday. The property is at least 300 years old with thick, cobbled walls. There is no central heating, though there is electric heating provided and during the colder months guests should make use of the wood burning stove which, when used regularly warms the thick walls and provides a very cosy atmosphere. The kitchen and bathroom both have towel radiators. Rose Cottage has a washing machine, a launderette is also available at the caravan park in the centre of the village. The property has a sofa-bed in the sunroom for occasional use with additional bedding available. The stairs in the property would not be suitable for people with mobility difficulties. Up to a maximum of 2 dogs are welcome to stay in the cottage, the charge is £20 for one dog and £30 for two dogs payable on arrival.
