Cookson Cottage
Cookson Cottage is situated in a beautiful bush environment. Located 15 minutes out of Thames in the Kauaeranga Valley, the cabin supplies all the amenities along with the peaceful setting, away from the hustle and bustle of town. The cottage is rustic and provides only the basics. You will need to bring essential supplies - all linen, toilet paper, soap etc. The kitchen is fully equipped. The Kauaeranga Valley Visitor Centre is nearby with basic supplies, a café in the height of summer, free wi-fi, friendly rangers and a wealth of information about the area. There is also a large lawn that's shared with the adjacent cottage (The Kauri Cottage). What to bring: • All bedding and linen • Firewood (or can be purchased from the Visitor Centre) Activities: • Swimming There is a water hole 5 minutes walk from the cottage. • Walking and tramping Walks in the Kauraeranga Valley range from 20 minutes to a full day. • Canyoning Adventure company Canyonz runs crayoning in the valley. In the area: Kauaeranga Valley is close to the Tairua/Pauanui beaches on the east coast (1 hour) and Cathedral Cove/Whangamata (1 hour 30 minutes). Thames and the Thames Coast are 20 minutes away. The nearest shops are in Thames. Vodafone and Spark have cell coverage. 2 Degrees has no coverage. Guests can access the houses with a vehicle. You will be given the gate code. There is also foot access to the Visitor Centre via a 2 minute bush walk. The cottages are situated in the Coromandel Forest Park in the Kauaeranga Valley. The area is private and tranquil. There is close access to a good swimming hole. The Department of Conservation Visitor Centre is a two minute walk away. They are open daily, have free 24 hour internet access and have in depth information on the facilities in the area. There is no bus service into the Valley so you will need your own transport. The road continues for another 9 kilometres past the Visitor Centre. This provides access to the tracks, swimming and other activities that the Valley has to offer.
