Les Vieux Chenes Our delightful glamping bell tent sits quieltly in its own private field with a commanding view along the valley from the twin ancient oaks for which this exclusive accommodation is named. The perfect way to enjoy our haven of tranquillity without having to pack all your own gear! Our Bell tent sleeps two in a comfortable double bed (all bedding is included) and comes with all your seating needs inside and out, solar lamps, plus cooking facilities, cool box, kettle, cooking equipment, bbq and a lovely log burning stove to keep you cosy. You will have access to your very own toilets and shower, also access to a freezer and charging point, just a short walk from the bell tent in a converted barn next to the main house. The Bell tent is situated in it's own private meadow field just a short walk from the small hard standing car park we have here. We are 1km from a small village that has a Bakery, Bar and Hairdresser and just a 10 minute drive to the large market town of Saint Hilaire du Harcouet. Due to the natural, uneven terrain we regret to inform you that we are unable to offer access to wheelchairs. We will be here to greet you and show you around, we will then leave you to enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings. Our house is on site so if you need anything please feel free to come and see us or if we are not in please call as we wont be far away. Stretch your legs Feeling energised by your surroundings? Then you’re in luck. Our Bell tent is less than 15 minutes from the Parc naturel régional et Géoparc Normandy-Maine an expansive area of protected countryside and old forests. In the other direction we’re just 40 minutes from the start of the vast beaches that stretch all up the west coast of Normandy (so beloved of Christian Dior) at Genet. Bird watchers should walk on up to the dunes at Dragey-Ronthon to see the Plovers nesting there too. Explore the Normandy countryside safely and without any pollution along one of France’s Top 10 La Voie Verts that runs close to La Maison Magique. This motor-free route, loved by cyclists, walkers and equestrians alike, runs over 90kms along renovated, once-forgotten railway routes from the magnificent medieval castle town of Domfront all the way to breathtaking Mont Saint-Michel in Brittany. Not forgetting the countless Villages Fleuri and beautiful town squares at every turn for more gentle strolls after a big lunch. If you’re looking for that adrenaline rush then there is also some excellent rock climbing at Fosse D’Arthur and only a little further afield both La Ferté-Macé and Ambrières have watersports, with the later also having a velorail for something a bit different. History and Culture We could talk all day about the absolute wealth of historical and cultural places everywhere you turn in Normandy and Brittany but here’s a few of our favourites to get you started. If its castles you love then medieval Domfront and Fougères are a must see. The castle walls at Fougères go on and on almost as far as the eye can see and Domfront seems as if it just grew out of the huge granite ridge from which it looks out for miles. Other impressive architecture can be seen at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mont Saint-Michel. Built at the end of a tidal causeway, it remained unconquered throughout the Hundred Years War. Sadly the same cannot be said of the XI century Benedictine Abbey at Lonlay L’Abbaye which was badly damaged during WWII but has been lovingly restored as the centrepiece of this charming village with its meandering streams and cobbled square. If you can’t decide between castles or abbeys then take a trip to the capital of Brittany, Rennes where you’ll see both in abundance plus every other kind of classic French architecture you can think of right up to the modern day. So much to see all in one place and only an hour away. More recent history from the ravages of WWII can sadly be seen in the many monuments around the regions near us but two towns in particular, Mortain and Avranches, tell of these struggles and the eventual liberation by the allied forces, Or take a relaxing stroll around the spa town of Bagnoles de L’Orne. This hidden gem is tucked away in the nearby forests, this town centres around it’s serene lake and is bedecked with beautiful flower displays all year round showing off it its bourgeoise, Belle Époque quarter and later Art Deco influences. Very near to us is the charming, indoor and outdoor Musée du Poiré. Dedicated to the region’s extensive perry and cider making history you can stroll through heritage orchards and look at the restored equipment used in the manufacture of the drinks on wide and accessible paths. It’s free to enter and has play equipment for children there too. Be sure to visit the gift shop to sample some fresh apple or pear juice, sparkling perry or even some calvados before your leave. Here at La Maison Magique, we have an uncluttered, natural and upcycling ethos to minimise the impact of our site on both the local and global ecosystems. With that in mind we have turned an existing barn on our site into professionally fitted toilet and shower facilities for your exclusive use using reclaimed materials wherever possible. To minimise light pollution and encourage nocturnal wildlife to still enjoy our space, please use torches to walk the short distance along the paths to our unisex toilet block and the shower room. Next to this is our washing up station for the inevitable washing up and you’ll also find our freezer here where you can swop out freezer blocks for the supplied cool box or keep some ice cream treats should you need to. We provide you with your 1st nights firewood and charcoal, you may then purchase more from us at the main house.
