Big Lake District house in Caldbeck (Keswick area)
Weekend off-season deal: 3rd night 150 message me for details Calva is a spacious family home at the foot of the Northern Fells in the cosy village of Caldbeck, situated directly on the Cumbria Way. The house sleeps 8 people in king, queen, double and 2 single beds with room for an additional 2 on sofa beds at an additional charge per head. The village plays host to a wealth of locally run amenities with a small shop, petrol station, cafes and a classic pub for a meal with locally brewed ale. Calva was built in the traditional style and was extended at the back in 2001. It was our family home for 26 years and we ran a small engineering business in an old barn across the yard. The barn has now been knocked down and a new family home has been built to replace it. Both living rooms have plenty of comfortable seating and coffee tables for relaxing and socialising. They both have large smart TVs with sound bars, subwoofers and complimentary Netflix. Guests are welcome to use the open fireplace and board games in the smaller living room. A large kitchen diner and outdoor seating area make the property ideal for big groups and families. The master bedroom has a super king sized bed and can be accessed via a spiral staircase from the living room below or from the adjoining twin room. The queen room has an extra single bed and a desk, the other double room has a desk too. The house backs onto the local primary school playing field - out of school hours it is free to use. It has goal posts, a play ground and also a hard tennis court. The booking board for tennis is outside the Parish Hall just opposite. On arrival park in the yard next to the house and the main entrance is up three steps on the side. The house is made up of: Two double bedrooms (one with a king size bed and one with standard double bed) One master bedroom with super king size bed & en suite One twin room which has a connecting door to the master bedroom Two living rooms Large kitchen diner One family bathroom - our showers are not power showers as we’re mindful of energy and water waste One downstairs toilet/utility room Central heating and airing cupboard Parking for 4-6 cars Garden to the rear with patio furniture and a barbecue Cycle storage in garden shed We live away from the property but there will always be someone nearby to answer your queries or solve your problems. Contact details will be provided in the house. The house is close to the village hall which is available for functions, parties, weddings etc. In the village there are a few cafes, a pub, a village post office/petrol station for groceries, a surgery and some specialist/souvenir shops. There is also a 12th century Anglican Parish church and a Methodist church next to the duck pond, the ducks are well fed by locals and visitors alike. In the mid 1800s Caldbeck was home to The Howk Bobbin Mill which employed approximately 60 people in the spinning and threading of bobbins for the cotton industry. The facility closed down in 1924 but its dramatic derelict remains are still standing alongside a stunning waterfall and can be visited free of charge along a short trail which skirts around the north of the village and starts 5 minutes walk from the house. There are also lots of other great walks from the house. A 20 minute walk from the front door will take you to the foot of our local fell High Pike. It can be scaled in an hour or so then from its peak you can head south east across Carrock Fell and then down towards the various swimming holes of Mungrisedale. Alternatively you can head south west to Skiddaw (one of the highest Peaks in the Lake District) and Bassenthwaite Lake. You can even walk to Keswick along the tops of various fells. There are cycle routes all over the place in the Lakes, both on and off road. Bikes can be rented from a few places in Keswick. There is a bus which tends to run once on a weekend (the schedule can vary so check before you travel). If you want to venture further than Caldbeck and the surrounding area you'll probably want a car or a bike. There are some walking recommendations and maps in the house for guests to borrow. We recommend you bring some kind of vehicle to the Lake District as there is limited public transport. However, if this is not an option Perkins Travel are available for pre-booked trips and can be arranged to take you to and from train stations and other destinations around the lakes. Below are some rough prices for 8 people taking popular journeys, these may fluctuate due to fuel prices rising and falling. Carlisle train station - Caldbeck: £35 Penrith train station - Caldbeck: £65 Wigton train station - Caldbeck: £17 Caldbeck - Keswick return: £80 Their phone number will be detailed in your welcome message. Make sure you book with them as soon as possible to ensure you get a place! Inside the house there are lots of details about beautiful local walks from Calva’s front door. Also information about local services, eateries, towns and places of interest.
