Bedale has a famous picturesque Market Place which you will probably drive through before arriving. This small town also has a heritage steam railway which run trains right into the Dales as far as Bolton Castle. Check their website for details. If you're touring by car, there are five different historic Yorkshire towns to discover nearby. All are about 12 miles from Bedale. Leyburn (gateway to the National Park); Thirsk (James Herriot country); Richmond (well preserved Norman Castle overlooking a remarkable market square); Northallerton (upmarket shops & Betty's Tea Rooms); Ripon (magnificent Cathedral; and Fountains Abbey, a world heritage site). Bedale is also well-positioned for exploring the North Yorks Moors, another National Park, which starts from about 15 miles to the east.
