Mountain Ambiance ~ Modern Comforts ! Welcoming visitors since 1911, history abounds the Pine Rest Cabins, some of which were part of the Harney Tin Mining camp in the 1800's. Cabin #5 is one of the originals of this well maintained tourist cabin court. The Spirit of the Black Hills definitely resides here and it has been a labor of love being the stewards of this old cabin for the past 26 years. Your Hosts, Jan & Steve 1 bedroom with 2 queens , 1 semi-private sleeping area with 2 singles ( or 1 king) double futon sofa bed, 1 bathroom with tub/shower , 2nd bathroom with 48" shower Approximately 750 sq. feet OCCUPANCY: 1-8 people Sorry, no pets. No smoking. No AC Cabin #5 is one large cabin with one bedroom and 2 bathrooms, approximately 750 sq. ft. Over 100 years old, this cabin has walls covered with bark facing, decorated with the rose-crucifix which was the original design of Black Hills Gold. It also features a stone fireplace of local rose quartz, South Dakota's state mineral. There is a wood burning stove insert so that you can still have a fire in the fireplace, but not to worry, there is also a modern day gas log fireplace for cozy and convenient heat. The main cabin is one large room with the sleeping area divided from the kitchenette/living area by two log-type bookcases. The kitchenette has a microwave, electric skillet, chef's pot for boiling or slow cooking, toaster, coffee maker and 2 under counter refrigerators. The tv is in the kitchenette/living area of this unit which also has a full size futon sofabed. The attached bedroom - with a quilt to cover the door - has its own bathroom with tub & shower and 2 queen size beds. The sleeping area has 2 single beds, which can be converted to a king size bed upon your request, and a bathroom with shower. The floors of this old cabin are a bit unlevel. This cabin features an 8x24 foot covered front porch. Sorry, no pets. No smoking. OCCUPANY: 1-8 people For your comfort, safety and satisfaction we do not book more than the maximum occupancy listed for the cabin. Keep in mind these occupancy numbers are intended for a combination of adults and children - the cabin will be quite crowded if you choose to fill it to the maximum capacity with adults. The futon is best suited for children. There are 10 cabins on the premises of Pine Rest Cabins to which a shared hot tub / spa building is accessible, which includes a large patio and small chiminea style fire pit. Behind Cabin #5 is a large shared playground with huge sandbox which children love. Wi -fi reception is good at the Bathhouse Spa patio and not bad at the Cabin when there aren't too many devices in use. We like to encourage everyone to kick back and leave the phone on the charger inside to totally appreciate your forest surroundings outside. We live on the property and tend the " Perky PINE cafe " coffee shop and cabins during the day with the help of our great staff. After hours we are available by phone but do appreciate a bit of privacy and totally respect yours. Hill City is a small, friendly , eclectic , year round mountain town. Arts, music, museums, timber, ranching, mining, hospitality, commuting and grit keep our community thriving and surviving here. Living in the center of the Black Hills - the " Paha Sapa" - we respect the spirit that drew us here and appreciate having the Black Hills National Forest as " our big back yard". Surrounded by an abundance of natural wonders , springtime brings a trickle of visitors from near and far. It is full steam ahead throughout the summer with attractions like Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, the Badlands, the Caves and the 1880 train. Soon it's September and we relax into hiking the trails , biking the Mickelson , and we try to make our way over to Custer State Park for the Buffalo Roundup . As we slow to the pace of wonder once again in the winter, we look forward to the line up of local entertainment at the pubs , wineries and eateries, heartily enjoy some cross country skiing and rarely miss church or a pick up games of broom ball at the local ice pond. We are truly grateful for a community that is filled with life , laughter and love year around. On the shady side of the mountain , the cabin is "nature cooled" by mid afternoon. There is no air conditioning, so should a hot day be predicted it is a good idea to keep the nice cool morning air in the cabin by closing the windows and pulling the curtains while you are out and about and then opening up and letting the fresh air flow when you return from your days activities. Fans are provided in the cabin should nature need a bit of help. We are in the mountains here at about 5, 000 feet , so you may need a light jacket in the evenings and it is a good idea to have shoe's , socks and long pants with you even in the summer as well as your shorts and flip flops.
