Brecon Beacons walkers paradise
Avalon Nook is located in the heart of the Brecon Beacons; a short walk gets you right into the hills. Arty & cosy with open fire, record player, LPs, telescope, Chromecast, books, games and good local pubs. Owned by best-selling writer/forager. NB we love dogs, but they are generally not allowed as my own dog doesn't like it! Fancy browsing from a vast range of books and settling down in a comfy, throne-like chair, in front of an open fire, to read for a while? Or perhaps you fancy sitting outside with a glass of wine or a chilled beer, enjoying views over acres of rolling hills, red kites circling lazily overhead? If so, Avalon Nook is the place for you. Technically speaking for AirBnB purposes an apartment, in reality, as a recent guest put it, Avalon Nook is an entire house. Situated on two storeys, downstairs is a large, cosy room with an open fire, sofas, a TV and lots of books and games as well as a record player and a selection of vinyl for you to play with. There's also a conservatory with a drinks cooler and cooking facilities, and a door into the extensive - and very beautiful - gardens. Upstairs are 2 bedrooms, both with double beds, a sparkly bathroom with a brand new shower (installed Feb 2019) and a quirky kitchen/diner, with a baby belling -style cooker and featuring an immaculate and original 1950s sink unit, next to the larger of the two bedrooms. In addition, there is a telescope available for the use of our guests. Being slightly away from the main village means that there's no light pollution here, and the night skies are truly breathtaking; it's for good reason that the Brecon Beacons National Park was recently made the first Dark Skies Reserve in the UK. There are also yoga mats for you to borrow it you're so inclined! The entire Nook is yours, as well as access to the wonderful gardens with views of the Brecon Beacons. In the summertime, you can sit under the maple tree and have breakfast. At any time of year, the veranda behind the house is sheltered enough to sit out at night and enjoy the stars...or even the snow if you wrap up warm! Avalon Nook is a walkers' paradise since the lane running past the house is the main route onto Pen y Fan and the glorious Cwm Oergham valley, a National Trust reserve as well as part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. We live next door, so if there is anything you need we can help. I also run a foraging school, running day courses and bespoke events and am happy to take out both groups and individuals. I offer a discount for guests to Avalon Nook. You might also like to sample a Botanical Gin Workshop or Perfume Workshop while you're here! Llanfrynach is a wonderful, quirky village, three miles outside of the pretty Georgian town of Brecon. There are plenty of good places to eat. The nearest pub is just under a mile away, a stroll down the lane to The Royal Oak in Pencelli. A mile and a half in the opposite direction is the Three Horseshoes at Groesfordd, voted Best Pub in Powys for 2018-19; stroll round the lovely churchyard (the largest in Wales) and see if you can spot the grave of a pirate; note that the village loos are run by the community and are twinned with loos in Burundi; if you need reading material, the telephone kiosk has been turned into a free library! You are also close to Talybont on Usk, just three miles away (take a stroll along the picturesque Brecon and Monmouth Canal and maybe enjoy a hearty pub lunch at one of the four pubs in the village!) We are well-placed for events at Peterstone Court, Buckland Hall and Brynich as well as the towns of Brecon and Crickhowell. And if you're maybe looking for a place to stay during the Hay Festival, we are just 20 minutes away. There are plenty of walks and good cycling to be had; Talybont on Usk, 3 miles away, has a fab state-of-the-art solar powered rainwater collection bike wash facility which our many of our guests absolutely love. We can store your bike in a locked space too if you wish. You can get a bus from the village into Brecon or further afield. If you need a lift to or from a station, if we can accommodate this then we will, otherwise there's a decent taxi service. We have one dog, a very friendly border collie named Lis. If you'd like to meet her she’d love it, but if not, that's fine too. She is not allowed to access the Nook. Dots are NOT allowed, sadly. Also, we provide a selection of teas, coffee, juices, a pint of milk, a loaf of bread, butter and various (home made) jams etc for breakfast on your first day. We have high speed broadband and Chromecast, which means you can stream TV programmes and films from your iPhone, iPad or laptop. It's very easy to use; all you need to do is download the app. We also have stacks of DVDs in the large Chinese cupboard for you to use as well as a record player with a selection of vinyl albums.
