Wildthorn is an original Arts and Crafts house that has been in our family for the last 70 years and has recently undergone a 2 year restoration to a very high specification. As the house we spent Christmas's in as children, Wildthorn is a very special place to spend time and with excellent access to Whitby and the North Yorkshire Moors, you couldn't be better located for a superb break away. The house is an original arts and crafts house build in 1910 which has recently undergone a substantial renovation and modernisation yet all of it's original features have been retained. Full of character, the house offers a large circular hallway with open fire with bench seating either side, a large well stocked kitchen/ diner with a ranger cooker, nespresso coffee machine and pretty much anything else you could possibly need, a dining room perfect for evening entertainment and a large and comfortable sitting room with wood burner. Upstairs the house enjoys a large circular landing overlooking the hallway downstairs with seating areas in nooks overlooking the views. It has 2 large king rooms, 1 double room and a twin room. There are 2 main bathrooms, one with large roll top bath. There are two separate loos - one upstairs and one downstairs. The two largest bedrooms are big enough to fit a family with young children and for that purpose we offer two additional floor mattresses and a cot where required. There is a large but sloping garden with a large flat terrace area complete with tables, chairs and a BBQ for outdoor dining. The terrace enjoys spectacular views over the valley complete with distant passing steam trains. There is parking for at least 4 cars outside the house and an additional space outside the garage across the road. The house has fast wifi available throughout, Amazon Echos for music and a TV and DVD player. Although the house can accommodate 10 - 12 where there are children or young infants, it is not suitable for more than 8 adults. The entire property is at the guests disposal (with the exception of one cupboard off the kitchen and one cupboard outside bedroom 4). It is our absolute priority to ensure that the health and safety of our guests is put first. Therefore, due to Covid 19 we have amended our check in/ check out times. Check in is strictly 6pm - I am afraid that at present we cannot allow early check in. Check out is strictly by 10am. We thank you for your understanding. Guests are welcome to contact the hosts (Gus & Anna) on their mobiles (provided at the time of booking) with any queries regarding the property or location. If you're wondering what to do in Whitby and which places to visit in Whitby and the surrounding area then fear not, the options are plenteous. Steeped in history, there are many visitor attractions that are connected to the town's fascinating past, such as the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, where you can learn about the famous explorer's life in the port town. Other things to do in Whitby include visiting the Dracula Experience on the seafront, where you can be guided through the story and learn about its connection to the town. A trip to Whitby would not be the same without climbing the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey, counting as you go, and exploring the beautiful ruins which tower over the town. Many flock to Whitby for its boutique shops and quirky streets, where you will find unique Whitby jet jewellery and other fascinating items. The town is also home to several annual events including the Bram Stoker International Film Festival and the Whitby Goth Weekend. There are countless options for those interested in walking in the North York Moors National Park, as the clifftop walks along the coastline are part of the Cleveland Way, and the Lyke Wake Walk finishes by nearby Ravenscar. The Yorkshire Coast is a great place to sample delicious, freshly caught seafood, and for many a trip to the area just wouldn't be the same without indulging in some delicious Whitby fish and chips. There is plenty of choice when it comes to restaurants in Whitby and the idyllic towns and villages along the Heritage Coast. Superb seafood restaurants are scattered along the coastline, serving exquisite meals using locally caught produce purchased from the local fish market. In addition the area has some wonderful traditional Yorkshire pubs and inns, serving Yorkshire ales and home cooked fare. Cafés, tearooms and sandwich bars are also abundant in the area, so you'll be spoilt for choice! Buses into Whitby run from the bottom of the road (approx 5 minute walk). Buses are regular (approx 3 an hour) and take approximately 20 minutes to get into the centre of Whitby. CANCELLATION AND COVID 19 We recognise that times are currently uncertain. If you make a booking which you cannot fulfil due to temporary government restrictions related to the pandemic, we offer a full refund or you can reschedule your trip to a future date. LOCAL INFORMATION – Shopping The two closest supermarkets are Co-op and Sainsburys in Whitby, about 3 miles away. The easiest way to Whitby is to drive up Carr Hill Lane and turn right on to the main road at the top, and then right again at the small roundabout. Continue following signs to Whitby. Co-op This is smaller than Sainsburys but reasonably well stocked. To get to the co-op follow the signs to town centre/ train station. You will get to a small roundabout with the railway station on the right – turn right at the roundabout and the coop is on the right. There is a pay and display car park at the front and a much larger carpark to the rear. This is also useful parking for visiting Whitby. Sainsburys To get to Sainsburys drive toward Whitby. You will reach a 3 lane junction with traffic lights where you can turn left to head to the centre of town. Turn right at these lights. Keep straight, going over the estuary (with amazing views!). You will eventually see Sainsburys signposted on the left (around a 4 minute drive). This is a large supermarket where you can buy clothing and basic household goods as well as food. Local Shops - Sleights There is a Bothams bakery on the main road through Sleights (turn left at the top of Carr Hill Lane). This is a well known local bakers (they also have 2 shops in central Whitby). There is an excellent butcher/ deli, Radfords, which in addition to selling high quality meat also supply free range eggs, local cheeses, chutneys and condiments, jams and fresh vegetables and fruit. There is a 7/11 shop and post office also on the main road through Sleights.
