The Green Woodpecker - the big house

We would love to welcome you in the sleepy village of Kán! The rustic house, almost at the end of the village on 1 hectare of land, is spacious, furnished with love and has everything you need. At the top of the land you have a beautiful view over the valley and you can walk in to the surrounding forests. Also there is an open garden house to relax, read a book or just take a nap in the hammock. Perfect tranquil hide away in Hungarian country side, if you don't mind the bumpy road to get here! The spacious house has high ceilings. It housed the last primary school of the village. In summer it stays cool due to the thick walls. In the colder months there is central heating on wood. We will have to add a wood charge. You have the garden in front of the house with herb spiral but are welcome to use the old stable and rest of the land as well. The old stable has an open space with big sofa's. You can play board games, pingpong or cook with a large group. At the back you will find a shady terrace with bbq. Also there is a spot for a campfire...under the stars... The woodfired hottub can fit up to 6 people (the record so far is 7 ). If you make the trip up on the land you will find a lovely a-frame garden house with a viewing platform. In future this could become an accommodation as well, for now enjoy this shared space in the donkeys field! Looking for a change and adventure we ended up here! We moved from Amsterdam to the middle of nowhere in Hungary. Dougal also still working abroad and Sanneke putting all her energy in renovating and gardening...and since recently learning Hungarian. When we have guests we will be around to help you if necessary, to have a chat here and there or to really meet you. We can make a delicious breakfast and do the occasional dinner or refer you to a neighbour who is a great cook! Kán is a quiet village at the end of the road. There are no shops or bars in Kán, we do have an organic farm at walking distance for meat, great cheese, eggs... At 5 km you will find the closest village with a small shop. There are many day trips to make. We love the city of Pécs, a 45 min drive. It is a very lively and beautiful town. They do a great light festival among many others. Orfü is a half hour drive. It is a touristy place, great to go for a swim in the lake. Here you can also go horse riding. For the closest natural spa you drive 10 min further to Magyarhertelend. Of course if you want more nature there are the Mecsek mountains! Another one of our favourites is the bear garlic extravaganza in our region at the beginning of April. When we came to have a look at this house, we fell in love with the place as soon as we turned of the tar road. Then there was still four km to go! You can say a lot about the road (and in Kán we do!), for sure it is adventurous and very bumpy ... But like a friend of us says: bad roads bring good people, good roads bring everyone! You need a car to get around, but we are also happy to pick you up from the train station in Szentlörinc, about 2,5 hours train from Budapest. After a few days here you don't want to leave anyway! Pets are welcome, but since we have a (male) dog and two cats who freely roam the place, only chilled animals or animals on a lead allowed.
