The Old Loft, a historic gem in heart of Stortford
The Old Loft is most of the upper storey of our much-loved family house, a unique 250 year old maltings and oast-house in the heart of Bishop’s Stortford. This self-contained space is accessed up the staircase of the main house and has its own private entrance. With exposed beams, traditional stone windows, sloping ceilings and leafy views, it is full of character and charm. It is all freshly painted to be light and airy. This is a real hidden, historic gem. There is parking for ONE car only. At the top of the communal staircase, there is a front door to The Old Loft, a unique and completely self-contained dwelling. You enter a long corridor with traditional oak floor. On your right is the first bedroom, with exposed beams, skylight, two windows looking out over trees and a very comfy double bed. Then you have the lovely, well-equipped free-standing kitchen/dining room, with dishwasher, washing machine and induction cooker. Further along the corridor you pass a coffee table with chairs looking over the garden. Next you will find a big bathroom with large shower and skylight, and at the end of the corridor are a few steps down into the stunning and enormous second bedroom which forms part of the old Oast-House. This has a king-size bed. There are more far-reaching views over the trees. The historic town centre is very close, just a five-minute walk down the hill. The market is there on Thursdays and Saturdays. There are lots of restaurants and takeaway places nearby and an ever-growing variety of shops, cafes and supermarkets. You can easily explore the town centre, Castle Park, and the tow-path along the river Stort. The nearest additional parking is at the police station car park down the hill. Stansted Airport is just ten minutes drive away. The train station is a ten minute walk, with fast links into the Airport, London Liverpool St, (only 35 mins) Stratford and Cambridge. It is also very easy to call a taxi to the door. We are always available by message or email or text. Also guests can knock on our door if they need anything, as we live downstairs! Windhill is the most sought-after residential area in the old market town of Bishop's Stortford. This wide street is lined with trees and old, traditional houses. Nearby is St Joseph's Catholic Church, the Old Monastery, and St Michael's Church, with its churchyard and accessible gardens. You can reach the High Street in town in a few minutes on foot. If you like walking, you can follow town trails to find all the old inns, tanneries, breweries and east-houses. For lovely walks you have the Cricketfield, Grange Paddocks, Hatfield Forest (15 mins drive), Birchanger Woods and the Harcamlow Way all nearby. Tourists will love Audley End House and gardens, and the pretty towns of Saffron Walden, Thaxted, Ware and Hertford, all easily accessible from Bishop's Stortford.
