Amarante is a small town with a privileged location to visit Porto, Guimarães and the Douro Wine Region (important tourist hubs classified as World Heritage by UNESCO). The historical references of Amarante must be looked for in the Megalithic and Paleolithic periods, dating from those times the oldest monuments in the county. However, from the Middle Ages, the most significant buildings were built in rural areas: the Romanesque churches of Gondar, Lufrei, Jazente, Gatão, Freixo de Baixo and the Monastery of Travanca, constituting the best of that architectural style bequeathed to the Iberian Peninsula. In the city it can be said that the building that stands out is the Monastery of S. Gonçalo, whose Church is an indispensable visit for any pilgrim or tourist. However, the truth is that the Historic Center brings together a remarkable set of buildings and monuments, mostly of Baroque style, of which the churches of S. Pedro and S. Domingos, Solar dos Magalhães and Casa da Cerca stand out. In the historic center of the city, the bridge, the Convent and Church of S. Gonçalo, the Churches of S. Pedro and S. Domingos, Casa da Cerca and Solar dos Magalhães deserve mention. Outside the city, the highlight goes to the Santa Cruz de Riba Tâmega Town Hall, the Travanca Monastery and the Romanesque churches of Mancelos, Jazente, Freixo de Baixo, Gatão or Gondar To enjoy the region we advise you to travel by car. However, upon request, we can go and get you to the center of Amarante. From Porto, you can come to Amarante by bus (45min travel) at Rodonorte. It is part of an active farm, which aims to be self-sufficient and sustainable. Besides producing food for self consumption, it produces to sell kiwifruit, honey, nuts, oranges, grapes .... It is the ideal place for lovers of birdwatching.
