The one bedroom apartment is located at Thornton Bay, approximately 10 kilometres north of Thames. It comes with all linen and cleaning is included. The apartment is cozy and has everything you need, and tea and coffee is provided. The beach is less than 100 metres away, for safe all tide swimming and good fishing. The studio faces north for all day sun and takes in wide sea views off the large deck. The apartment backs onto the Coromandel Forest Park and the native birdlife is abundant. The Waiomu Cafe and the local general store / fish and chip shop are both less than 5 minutes away. Historic Thames is 10 minutes by car, and Coromandel Town is only 45 minutes drive up the beautiful Thames Coast Road. Auckland and Hamilton are both only 1 1/2 hours drive, and Auckland International Airport is just over an hour's drive. Its a great base for hiking, fishing, cycling, or just exploring the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. The well known destinations of Whitianga, Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach, Hobbiton (Matamata) and Coromandel Town are all no more than 1.5 hours drive. Guests have full access to the apartment, which is completely self contained. There is a dedicated parking space and the access is via a concrete driveway. There is a barbecue available for guest use. There is a toaster, microwave oven, fridge, electric frypan, and tea and coffee is provided, and there is a bench top oven included. There is no hob. Hosts John and Rose live in the house in front of the apartment and will be happy to assist with any special requests or information. Our old cat Ming is very friendly and will make you feel welcome! Thornton Bay is a quiet neighbourhood with a nice beach and views over the firth of Thames to Waiheke island. There are about 50 houses, most of which are retired people or holiday houses. There is a micro-climate, with no frosts and temeratures often a few degrees warmer than Thames. There are two buses passing on the state highway per day and can be waved down for pickup. A taxi can be arranged if required to Thames. The best form of transport is to rent or own a car. The Thames ares is one of the most historical in New Zealand. Maori (Ngati Maru and Ngati Tamatera tribes) have been in the area for over 1000 years and there is much evidence on the coast of previous villages and fortified sites (pa). Captain Cook anchored at Waiomu (5km away) on his first visit. The area experienced a significant gold rush in the late 1800's and later the area was the site of large scale timber milling (many of the wooden houses in San Francisco are built from Kauri timber from the area). The Coromandel Peninsula now exists on mainly an economy of tourism, farming (including forestry), and aquaculture (mussel and oyster farming).
