Besides the Pacific Ocean, the Light Station is surrounded by the recent addition to the Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries, the Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands unit of the California Coastal National Monument. The only land-based part of the National Marine Sanctuaries, this 1,665 acre jewel was listed by the New York Times as one of the top 3 of the 52 Places to Go in 2014. Surrounding our Lighthouse and stretching all the way to the town of Point Arena, this wild and beautiful place includes access to 12 coastal miles of undeveloped federal and state-managed public lands, coastal bluffs, the estuary of the Garcia River, sandy beaches and dunes, and adjacent small islands accessible during low tide. And it is free to visit! Don’t miss this unique and spectacular “neighbor” while you are here. The city of Point Arena is just 4.5 miles away and boasts several restaurants, cafes, live music, the Arena Theater which show first run movies and presents live concerts, an art collective gallery, the B. Bryan Preserve with zebras, giraffes and more, and a working harbor. A short 25 minute drive south will bring you to Gualala which is home to several art galleries, shops and restaurants, two supermarkets and two gas stations and the amazing Gualala Arts Center. Heading north for 6 miles gets you to Manchester, with a market and hardware store and several coastal access routes to Manchester State Beach. Ranging farther north will take you to Elk, Little River, Mendocino and Fort Bragg. There is no public transit or taxi service available in this area. We have a 3-night minimum on holiday periods including Memorial, Labor Day and Presidents Day weekends, and the 4th of July and Christmas-New Years period. The Thanksgiving holiday (Thursday through Sunday) is a 4-night minimum. We are on a septic system, so we ask that you not put anything other than toilet paper in the toilets and that you do not pour any grease down the drains. There is a friendly lighthouse cat on the property named Arena Mina. Please do not let Mina into your unit, we need to be able to find her at the end of the day to put her safely away for the night.
