SUGGESTED EXCURSIONS AND NERRBY ATTRACTIONS THE "TUFO AREA": Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano 20/30 Km from the villa Pitigliano, an extremely well preserved medieval town is situated on a steep tuff rock, 313 metres above sea-level. The area of Pitigliano is characterized by tuff stone, a hardened type of volcanic magma. Small creeks have cut steep valleys into the landscape and there is a lot of woodland. Not far from Pitigliano is Lake Bolsena, a huge water-filled crater and the largest Italian lake. . Sorano is an ancient medieval hill town hanging from a tuff stone over the Lente River. One of the best preserved examples of historical "borgo" with nearby ancient necropolis dating back to the etruscan age Sovana - Etruscan by origin, Sovana became a Roman municipium, and, from the 5th century, an episcopal see. Conquered by Lombards in (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) , it was chosen as their administrative center in the area. Later, it became the centre of the county under the Aldobrandeschi family. In the Middle Ages it was known as Soana. Its importance declined when the county was acquired by the Orsini, who moved the capital to Pitigliano. The " Mulino" waterfalls – Saturnia. - 7 Km from the villa. Hidden in a corner of Southern Tuscany that’s off most tourists’ radars, these waterfalls are located just outside the town of Saturnia The Cascate del Mulino has become one the of the symbols of this region. These waterfalls flows onto the traventine rock below, which over the centuries have been carved into tiny pools that are filled by smaller waterfalls flowing from one pool to another and out into the lush vegetation that surrounds them. Locals in this area think the waterfalls are their best kept secret. Immersed in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, they’re a hidden oasis amongst an already effortlessly picturesque scenery of lush fields and rustic farmhouses. But the locals don’t just come to the Cascate del Mulino to admire the view, they also escape the stresses of modern life and soak in the blissfully warm water, which flow into the waterfalls from hot springs underground. To be honest, warm doesn’t really describe this water. At 37.5°C all year round, these waters are same ones that flow into the world-renowned health spa down the round, except here you get to enjoy them for free and while taking in the beauty of the Tuscan countryside at the same time! Like all natural splendours, the Cascate del Mulino can be enjoyed for free every day and night and if you’re brave I’d suggest taking a dip at night, especially if you’re visiting in winter. It’s painful when you first strip down to your bathing suit, but once you hop into the water with clouds of steam rising into the cold night sky, it’s pure and utter bliss, trust me. Vie Cave - 20 - 30 Km from "I Melograni" The Vie Cave (in English excavated roads), also known in Italian as Cavoni, are an impressive road network linking an Etruscan necropolis and several settlements in the area between Sovana, Sorano and Pitigliano, consisting mainly of trenches excavated as nearly vertical cliffs in tuff, sometimes over twenty feet high, possibly serving as an effective defense system against invaders. In Roman times, the Vie Cave became part of a road system that was connected to the main trunk of the Via Clodia, an ancient road linking Rome and Manciano, through the city of Tuscania, which branched off from the Cassia road in Lazio territory. Parco dell’Uccellina - 40 Km from the villa The Maremma Regional Park (Parco Regionale della Maremma),also known as Uccellina Park (Parco dell’Uccellina) covers a coastal area between Principina a Mare and Talamone near Grosseto, Magliano in Toscana and Orbetello, right up to the Livorno-Roma train line. THE PARK The park covers (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) hectares plus an extra (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) hectares of open land around its boundaries. The park goes from the mouth of the river Ombrone up to Talamone. This 25km stretch has hills that gently descend across marshland, farmland and grazing pastures down to the sandy and rocky beaches along the coast. The air is full of the perfume of aromatic shrubs and the sound of animal cries. Bright berries provide splashes of colour. The Argentario Peninsula comprises historical villages, secluded beaches wild rock coastline and beautiful sand dunes beaches Porto Ercole - 40 Km from The villa Porto Ercole is a city in the region of Tuscany. It is part of the town, Monte Argentario, in the province of Grosseto. Porto Santo Stefano (the most populous) is one of the two major towns that form Monte Argentario The historic core is enclosed within its walls, which were erected by Siena in the Renaissance, on pre-existing structures. The Palace of the Rulers overlooks the picturesque Piazzetta Santa Barbara, which overlooks the harbor. The building, built in the sixteenth century, preserves the facade in Renaissance style of the past. The building housed the Spanish rulers, and at the opposite end of the square on the side that looks towards the sea, is the fifteenth bastion of Santa Barbara. Worthy of note is the Giardino Corsini, in which there are many rare tropical and subtropical botanicals. The country is dominated by the mighty fortress Aldobrandesca, a fortification built on several occasions between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance around existing structures. Near Porto Ercole is "La Feniglia" , an enormous sand dune beach 6-8 km long and 1½ km wide that connects Monte Argentario to the mainland at Ansedonia in the south of the peninsula. The beach is the most famous in the area, not only because of its fine sand but also as it is highly suitable for all the family: the beach shelves gently, making the sea warm and ideal for small children. Another major feature of La Feniglia are the Mediterranean pine trees that run down the centre of the dune providing welcome shade during the heat of the day. There is a road that runs down the middle of the dune, where cars are not allowed. This makes it and ideal place for bicycling – in fact bicycles can be rented at the beginning of the beach. La Feniglia can found about 1 km outside Porto Ercole. Porto Santo Stefano - 40 Km from the villa Porto Santo Stefano is a seaport town on the west coast of Italy, in the municipality of Monte Argentario, in the Province of Grosseto, Tuscany. It is the municipal seat of Monte Argentario and one of the two major towns that form the township, along with Porto Ercole. The region is on the slopes of Mount Argentario, which dominates the whole area. Porto Santo Stefano has regular ferry service to the Isola del Giglio (Giglio Island). After the capsizing of the cruise ship Costa Concordia on 13 January (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) , many of the ship's passengers and crew were evacuated to the mainland on these ferries.
