Settlers House on Schoodic Point
The Settlers House is the oldest remaining home on Schoodic Point. The home has a warmth & serenity that is difficult to put into words. Except for all the modern conveniences it feels like my Great-Grandmothers house once felt. This home has plenty of room for small mature families and with the king and queen bedrooms being at opposite ends of the home it is also the perfect getaway for two couples. Built in 1765 it is the oldest remaining home in the area. The cape cod portion of the home is the oldest section. This style with its sturdy post and beam construction was very popular with the early settlers. It was not a wealthy families home and we try to maintain it "within reason" as it was when we purchased it. During a more recent renovation just three decades ago in which I added the dormer windows I found that the roof is actually put together with wooden pegs instead of nails. I also found fragments of newspapers used for insulation prior to the civil war. One fragments had the date Thursday, March 21, 1839. The year 1765 is carved into one of the timbers under the living room walls. In all the Settlers House has been added too a few times but its simple beauty, charm and colonial aura remains and are inescapable. The yard is approximately 3/4 acres. When you are ready to enjoy some beautiful scenery or exercise just get on your bike or walk the park loop in front of the house. I mow the lawn, take the trash, water the flowers, live 2 miles away and usually drive by the house at least once a day. I do try to at least say hi, introduce myself and answer any questions. Here you can have remote, secluded, quiet or crowds anytime you want, it's just simply your call. Birch Harbor/Winter Harbor is less commercialized than the other tourist spots but there's still a lot to do especially those guests who desire a more relaxed, less crowded atmosphere. There are shops, restaurants, kayak/bike rentals and other businesses to explore including one of the oldest golf courses in the country. You can purchase lobster fresh off the boat that like everything else here won't break the bank. Two weeks during the summer there is an arts festival nestled around a one day lobster festival and year round just about every weekend there is a program, theater, concert, dance or some other event going on. Acadia National Park is the most visited national park in the country and the majority of that onslaught is to Mount Desert Island. Fortunately we don't experience the sheer daily magnitude of people, traffic or cruise ships that MDI sees. Here you will be able to quickly park in town and you won't have to wait in long lines at the ice cream stand down the street. Anyway, Birch Harbor/Winter Harbor is a smaller seaside community across the bay from Bar Harbor with the only section of ANP on the mainland. The entrance road to the Schoodic District is a few hundred yards down Main Street where you'll find miles of hiking and biking trails. At Frazers Point there are picnic tables, many with fire rings and also a long pier and float for fishing. The views from the seaside loop around the park are gorgeous. Schoodic Head the highest point on the peninsula offers panoramic views east, west, north and south. At the southern most tip of the park is Schoodic Points expansive ledges that reach down into the sea with the waves breaking against them. And finally there is the Bar Harbor-Winter Harbor Ferry making daylight runs every hour back and forth during the tourist season. Combined both legs of the trip are a 14 mile leisurely 1 hour trip Hope you enjoy yourself wherever you end up! It's just about a mile and a half walk to the center of Winter Harbor. And it is a great hike or bike ride but then again why walk? There is a free shuttle bus that tours the area in the summer and it travels by the house every half hour or so. So just stand out at the road and wave. They will be glad to pick you up. But a car is necessary. Main St., Birch Harbor 2 miles to Winter Harbor center. As the crow flies a couple hundred yards to the park, by road 1.5 miles to the park entrance. Stream ROKU TV: Watch what seems like an endless selection of free channels, movies and sitcoms. REGULAR (OTA)TV CHANNELS: Nbc, Cbs, Abc, True Crime, Quest, Get, Twist, CW, Decades, Circle, Ion, Fox, Mpbn, Create, World, Kids (NOTE: TV Antenna reception can be affected by atmospheric conditions.) The internet is DSL and up to 10Mbps which is "normally" enough to watch a hi-def movie while someone else is also using the internet. *** Someone has reported problems working "at home" so please don't try to do a working vacation here. Thanks. There are three air-conditioners, in the MBR, LR and Fireplace Rms that were new in 2021 and they worked well but 2021 wasn't extremely hot. There are also fans if desired.
