Welcome to Crebs House! Eugene Crebs was one of many Hessians hired by the British to fight in the Revolutionary War. During the war, Crebs was captured and imprisoned in nearby Frederick, MD. While in prison, he met a young woman who would bring food to the POWs. Talk about meet cute! After the war, the two married and stuck around, setting up a wagon-making shop. Crebs House is the old wagon shop. The adjacent property was home. The space is defined by the large downstairs fireplace which probably doubled as a forge. In the 1980s, a previous owner stripped the walls down to the logs which remain exposed. Holes in the logs along the north wall are probably remnants of wagon making. Crebs House has been featured twice on Preservation Historic Winchester's annual Holiday House Tour. Feel free to flip through the storyboards PHW generated for the tour in 2015. There's a fun photo album on the coffee table, too. Cozy Crebs House features include a gas fireplace in the bedroom upstairs, coffee/tea self-service and did we mention the logs! The attic is for storage, and the floors up there are treacherous and unsafe. Please don't risk it. The door to the attic cannot be locked, so please be especially careful to instruct/supervise the little ones accordingly. In back, the property line is defined by a fence. There's a gate, but thanks for sticking to the Crebs House side of the fence. The Crebs House is located at the top of Potato Hill. There are lots of competing stories about how the neighborhood got that name. From the house, it's a gentle descent along Loudoun Street to the pedestrian mall (aka Old Town). Because Loudoun St is continuous with the car-free mall, there isn't a lot of through traffic, so you should be able to sleep soundly. (If you're a really light sleeper, no worries, we provide a Dohm sound conditioner.) The City of Winchester is gradually improving the sidewalks around town. Suffice to say, Loudoun St is overdue. On the upside, the beauty is coming! No garage, sorry. Street parking is generally ample though. There are an increasing number of Uber drivers if you want to scoot down to the University. Downtown is walking distance, as above, so you have easy access to plenty of brew pubs and a few good restaurants. Honestly, there's no reason to drive around, except to get to a grocery...the Dollar Store notwithstanding. Come on, Trader Joe's, come to Winchester!
