Casa delle Castagne
This is a gem of a vacation home – a cozy house in a quiet and beautiful setting high above Lake Garda. Sit on the terrace or in the huge garden and enjoy the magnificent lake view, or have your afternoon nap in the hammock between the old chestnut trees on the large property. The house is part of the small mountain village of Sasso, just a scenic 15-minute car ride (or a steep one-hour hike) from the lake. It's ideally suited for couples or families. This house is our vacation home, and it is our favorite spot in the world. So don't hesitate to ask us everything you need to know. Here are a few basic infos: The house has three bedrooms, two at the ground floor (each with a queen bed) and one below the roof on the first floor, with two single beds (this would be a good room for children). The main room is spacious and combines a living room, a dinner table and the kitchen. It has a gallery with a extra sofa bed and a TV. The wood fired oven makes the main room cozy on chilly evenings – wood is provided! The bathroom is complete with a shower and a washing machine. We're sure, though, that you will spend a lot of time outside in the garden, and this is really what this place is about. It's a 3000 square meter (over 30.000 square ft) terraced property which was once a vineyard. Now there's kiwi plants, some fruit trees and many chestnuts. Close to the house, there are plenty of spots to put deckchairs, set up the ping pong table, read a book and enjoy the wonderful view. The small village of Sasso sits 500 Meters above the lake. It's an authentic mountain village, with a little shop and bar/cafe where the locals meet. If you like, you can start your hikes into the mountains right at the house, or walk down to the lake on steep and beautiful ancient trails (it takes about 45 min.). Technically, Sasso is part of the town of Gargnano down by the lake, and Gargnano with its port and lakeside promenade is also a wonderful spot to swim in the lake, have a cappuccino and enjoy the Italian cuisine. Not too long ago, lemons were the main produce of Gargnano, which says something about its pleasant climate. In our opinion, it is still one of the nicest places at Lake Garda – there's a touristic infrastructure (restaurants, shops etc), but it's not overrun by tourists. You can find your local bakery, grocery shops, and an amazing hardware store. The closest airports are Verona, Bergamo and Milan-Linate. It's easiest to rent a car from there. Once you're settled in, there's also a bus which runs a few times a day from Gargnano to Sasso – in case you want to walk down but cannot make it up again after a few glasses of wine... :-) There no internet connection in the house. A public Wi-Fi is available on the village square. It's a really quiet place, so no parties or loud music, please!
