Angouleme is the capital of the Charente. There is a 12th century Cathedral and the National Historic Hotel de Ville dates back to the 13th century. The city has a lively nightlife thanks to its many bars, cafes and restaurants. It is famous for its international festivals and the Circuit des Ramparts ,a classic car street race around the narrow winding streets. Cognac is world famous and the big Cognac houses, Courvoisier, Hennessy, Martell, Otard and Remy Martin all offer guided tours. Confolens hosts a folk dancing festival for troupes from all over the world. Beautiful villages such as Verteuil- sur- Charente with it's magnificent Chateau and Nanteuil-en-Vallee are nearby. There is a manmade beach and lake in Villefagnan. La Vallee des Singes .Monkey park is a popular tourist attraction.
