Gwyndu Cottage, 18th century cottage with garden
Gwyndu Cottage was built circa 1700 and is one of the oldest cottages in Meifod, and although renovated to modern standards has retained its cottage charm with cosy rooms, low ceilings, exposed beams and a log burner. Outside there is a south facing cottage garden with an outdoor dining area, and a covered outdoor area ideal for drying wet clothes and fishing equipment or securely storing 4 bicycles. Graded by Visit Wales as 4 star. Dogs are only allowed with prior agreement. Bedroom One has a king size bed, Bedroom Two can either be a king size bed or two single beds. The bed linen is 100% cotton and is line dried whenever possible. On street parking. The nearest train station is in Welshpool (which is about 15 minutes away). There are many walks and cycle routes in the area and there is excellent fly fishing on the River Vyrnwy and Banwy in season and some people use the River Vyrnwy for wild swimming during the summer. Meifod also has community tennis courts and day, week or annual ticket can be obtained at a low cost from the post office/village shop. Along with the post office/village shop, Meifod also has a pub which serves food, tea room, church and the COBRA rugby club. Tesco, Sainsburys and Asda all deliver to Meifod. I am close by if any problems and can be contacted by telephone or email. Meifod is a tranquil village, not far from the Shropshire border. Meifod makes an ideal base for visiting Snowdonia or the welsh boarders being within easy distance of Dolgellau, Ironbridge, Llangollen, Shrewsbury, Wrexham and the welsh coast at Aberdyfi. Not far from the village there are the castles or Powis, Montgomery, Dolforwyn and Whittington. There are also 2 steam railways locally, the Welshpool to Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway and the Cambrian Heritage Steam Railway based in Oswestry and Llynclys. Llanymynech rocks provides challenging rock climbing or alternatively after a not too strenuous a walk fantastic views of the Shropshire plain, and as the area is a nature reserve on a limestone escarpment, birds such peregrine falcons can be seen and there is a fabulous display of orchids at the right time of year. Adjoining the rocks is the Llanymynech limeworks heritage area including the unusual Hoffman Limekiln (remember to take a torch). Lake Vyrnwy, with its many trails and its RSPB reserve is not too far away. As is the Montgomery Canal which runs from Newtown, through Berriew, Welshpool, Arddleen, Llanymynech until it joins the Llangollen Canal at Frankton Junction. The nearest railway station is at Welshpool which is approximately 15 mins taxi ride away. Meifod is also on a bus route. There is plenty of on street parking outside the front of the cottage. There is also a quiet free public car park a couple of minutes walk away. The listing is for the whole house and garden for which you have sole use. Behind the garden is a small paddock in which my Sheep sometimes live. If you would like to use the paddock during your stay please let me know and I will remove the sheep.
