Larkrise Cottage is 4 km from Stratford in the countryside of the Avon Valley. A"Tranquility Base", yet close to all the historic locations of the West Midlands. In the surrounding villages are good English inns with imaginative menus and just down the road is Stratford with over 100 places to eat. At Larkrise we provide a breakfast of locally-sourced produce to start a day of exploring historic Warwick or walking on the Cotswolds, some 15 miles away. This place offers England at its best. Larkrise Cottage is an old Gamekeeper's cottage on the Billesley Estate. It is located not far from the deserted village of Billesley which was wiped out by the Black Death in the 14th C. It's church was the likely wedding location of William Shakespeare and the village shows evidence of Celtic and Roman occupation. The Manor House is now a hotel but dates back the early 17th C when is was bought from Elizabeth I by the Lord Mayor of London. Both church and Old manor are worth a visit. Guests access their suite via a key to the front door and then upstairs. During the summer months access is available to the front garden, overlooking fields towards the Avon Valley, where chairs and a table are available. Larkrise cottage is a family home where guests have their own suites and the family use the north wing. The dining room and reception is used by guests. Lots of information about the location is available in the cottage via the hosts. This a rural location in close proximity to the towns of South Warwickshire and the West Midlands. Access to Stratford is easy by car - 5 mins to the centre and theatres However, in the village of Wilmcote, some 20 mins walk, where Shakespeare's mother lived, there is a railway station. A bus service to Stratford, the 229 come up the Ridgeway from Stratford but not too frequently. There are a significant number of taxis in Stratford. The area is great walking country with changing views round each bend or hill and many interesting historic places to see. Lots of historic locations in the area...stately homes, castles and churches. Good shopping in Stratford, Leamington Spa, and Solihull with Birmingham just a short train journey away. NB: PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WISH TO BOOK TWIN OR KING-SIZED BED IN THIS ROOM.
