Lovely rural retreat near Wells in Somerset
Pretty, cosy, character filled cottage in Easton, three miles from Wells. Built mid 1800s, can accommodate three people via one double room and one small single room. Share the cottage with me and my two cats. Located between the magical Mendips (an area of outstanding natural beauty) and Somerset Levels, close to Glastonbury, Bath and Bristol. Perfect if you like big skies, owls hooting at night and lambs baa-ing. Bring bicycles for wonderful cycling across the Somerset Levels. I have one spacious double bedroom and one small single bedroom, plus a separate bathroom, for guests to use. The house is full of character and peaceful. It is lived in by me and my two cats (Bessie and Cora) and we will be here during your stay but will not encroach on your privacy. You are welcome to use the sitting room (evenings), kitchen (please clear up after yourselves) and garden. The cottage: Originally built in the mid-1800s, the cottage was fully renovated five years ago so has all the comfort of modern living while retaining 2ft thick walls and a pretty, cottagy feel. Downstairs, oriental rugs cover wooden or flagstone floors and colourful paintings and mementoes from my travels in Asia and Africa hang on the walls. There's a wood burning stove in the sitting room which opens into a light and airy sun room for reading or basking in the sun's warmth. Please note that I use this room to work, as I work full time from home. This means the living room and sun room are not available to guests during the day time (9am-6pm on week days). The dining room opens to the large well equipped kitchen. There's also a downstairs loo. Outside, there's a small garden and a patio area with table, chairs and a BBQ (you are welcome to use it; please clean it afterwards). I love living here, with the Mendips at my back and the Somerset Levels stretching out in front. The owls hoot at night, wood pigeons coo in the mornings, and in the early evenings in summer, ewes call their lambs to sleep. The cottage, patio and the garden. I only have room for one car on my drive (mine) but there is roadside parking nearby. I'm happy to be available to offer recommendations for things to do or to respect your privacy. I am just 3 miles from Wells, 6 miles from Cheddar Gorge, 9 miles from Glastonbury, 25 miles from Bristol and Bath. Around 10 National Trust properties within an hour's drive. The south coast of Dorset is about 1.5 hrs away and Brean, on the Somerset coast, is 45 mins away. I'm on the edge of the Mendip Hills – an area of outstanding natural beauty – and the Somerset Levels are great for walking and cycling. There are lots of nature reserves within easy cycling distance for nature lovers. In autumn and winter, you can see the spectacular starling murmurations. The nearest pub is one mile away in the village of Westbury-sub-Mendip and another a mile further on in Rodney Stoke, which has a good reputation for food. The very popular Queen Vic in Priddy is 3 miles away (up steep Ebbor Gorge; a workout before you get there if you're walking!) and the equally popular Sheppey Inn, set amid the peat beds on the Levels, is 6 miles away. You need to book the Sheppey three weeks in advance if you want to eat there ((URL HIDDEN) The bus from Cheddar to Wells stops in Easton village. But to truly enjoy the area you need a car or bicycle, unless you are happy to explore on foot. Cycling is great on the Levels - they're so flat! There is a small but good children's play area at the bottom of the lane. However, my place is not suitable for small children as my garden is open to the lane and farm vehicles use this track.
