The hosts live in the neighbouring property - Greenwood Cottage - so are on hand to help if you need it. Greenwood House is set in rural, agricultural land, 1.5 miles from the small town of Wigton. It's the perfect place to unwind and walk dogs, whilst keeping an eye out for the local deer, rabbits, badgers, and owls. There are no street lamps for miles around so it's peaceful, quiet and very dark! Wigton is a small town with four schools, two supermarkets, a post office, swimming pool, library, butchers, lots of independent shops, take aways, cafes, pubs, good local bus links, and railway station. And from Greenwood House, Carlisle with its history and fab shopping is only 20 minutes' drive away. You can get to favourite tourist spots in the Lakes within 30 minutes to an hour, but can also easily visit Hadrian's Wall, beautiful seaside towns on the Solway Coast, and Gretna Green in Dumfries and Galloway. Greenwood House is within a half hour drive of Keswick and the Northern and Western Lake District, the Solway Coast area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Scotland and the border country including Hadrian's Wall and the amenities and attractions of Carlisle, our historic border city. We love the Monkey Tree and Barrista Cafes in Wigton, and The Black Lion pub in Ireby. Shuhag Indian Restaurant also does a mean take away! You can drive into Wigton in five minutes, and walk in about half an hour. From Wigton there are regular buses to Keswick, Cockermouth, Carlisle etc. and trains to Carlisle, Whitehaven, St Bees and Ravenglass. Your group will probably want cars to reach lots of the wonderful places in the Lakes, which are unfortunately are not served well by public transport. If you are a dog owner, there are lots of good walks you can do from the house: along the single lane road into Wigton itself; into nearby fields to copses where our three local deer live; over fields and across the trainline towards Micklethwaite; and in Phoenix Park in Wigton too. Binsey, is a nearby (small) mountain to climb, and on a clear day you will see another mountain - Criffel - in South-West Scotland.
