Studio Suite, close to UNI, in restored QLDER

Our suite downstairs is within walking distance to the UNIVERSITY and consists of a large bedroom, private bathroom and kitchenette with bar refrigerator, kettle, and microwave - everything you need to make your stay cost effective. This is great accommodation if you need access to the university for short or long term stays. Welcome to Cairns where the 'rainforest meets the sea'! Our Queenslander home (built in the 1940s) sits high in the hills of Smithfield, capturing all the sea breezes from the coast. In addition, Smithfield has a large shopping centre where you can purchase just about anything you need. Like other QLDER houses, our home is built on stilts. We have a cool suite downstairs that consists of a very large bedroom (queen bed), private double sink bathroom and separate kitchenette with bar sized refrigerator, kettle, and microwave - everything you need to make your stay cost effective. A second bed can be located in the bedroom should you be travelling with a companion. The downstairs area also houses Mark's art studio so whilst it is private, you will sometimes pass us in the hallway. There is public transport nearby that would take you to the shopping centre, the city, and the beaches. The bus system has improved in the last 5 years but be aware that buses tend to be between 30 and 60 minutes apart depending on the time of the day. Guests will have access to a private bathroom, a kitchenette, a shared laundry, a shared older style BBQ, and wifi. There is a large deck upstairs with table and chairs that is available for use and of course if you want to cook in our kitchen then just let us know. Mark's studio is also downstairs so you might run into him in the hall way but that is the only shared space. We are a busy family with diverse interests. Mark is an artist and a musician. His artwork adorns all the walls of the home. I am a psychologist working with disadvantaged children and youth in the Cairns area. I work in education with schools and families. My position is challenging but I love working with the families. We are usually home at night and are happy to hear about your day and the sites that you have seen. We have lived in the area for over 25 years so we are more than willing to help you out with where to go and what to see. We can point you to the best cafes, music, restaurants, attractions and natural beauty spots that Cairns has to offer! We have compiled a guide that will help you find the places that we recommend and we have included their addresses so that you can find them with your GPS! We have spent over 6 months travelling in the States (2013 and again in 2017) and have bought back lots of great ideas from fellow airbnb hosts so hopefully you will find that our accommodation has heaps to offer. We have cool breezes all year round. We are close to beaches, shops and the city. The home is well positioned being a 10 minute walk to James Cook University; a 10 minute drive to the beaches; 15 minutes to the city; and 20 minutes to the Kuranda. We are on many bus routes as the university tends to be the transport hub of the north. You can get to the beaches or to the city and it takes around 30 minutes depending on the time of day. Buses also go to the local shopping centre but you can also walk. In addition, transfers to and from the airport, can be arranged as the taxis tend to be expensive. If we are going to the city and you require a lift we are also happy to provide this service. We returned from 3 months travelling in the States in 2013 and we gathered lots of great ideas from fellow airbnb hosts so hopefully you will find our accommodation has heaps to offer. Family evening meals can be provided for additional costs and some notice - feel free to inquire - we know that sometimes after a long day sight seeing the last thing you feel like doing is cooking and eating out tends to get expensive - we should know after 3 months on the road.
