I am available to you by telephone or email during & before & after your stay for English. I live in Australia but can assist you by telephone or email as necessary. I am happy to assist you with travel and transfer and orientation arrangements for your stay. I strongly recommend that you contact Simonetta of ‘Discover Cilento’ travel agency in Pisciotta for travel information and bookings. Simonetta can also assist with local car hire, bus and boat excursions to Paestum, Pompeii and Capri, as well as assistance in organising your train bookings and trips to the Blue Grottoes of Palinuro. She speaks English, and she is a friend of mine. Pisciotta is a medieval village in Cilento, in Campania. It teeters on a hillside above the mediterranean. Seaside beaches are 2.5 km by road below. Pisciotta is situated in the Vallo Luccano marine and national park - the largest in Italy. There is a road that passes through the village from Ascea to Palinuro, this bifurcates down to Marina Pisciotta en route to the railway station. There is no car access in the historical centre of the village, only pedestrian access via narrow streets and stairways. It is a positively charming traditional village. Very little English is spoken. Some French, some German and some Swedish is spoken. Because of this you must be of independent nature and you will be rewarded with an authentic southern Italian holiday. There are a number of very good local restaurants in and around the village as well as in the marina. The food generally is excellent. There is a farmers market twice a week - Wednesday and Saturday mornings, selling locally grown produce. There is a general produce market in Piazza Pinto on Saturday mornings. Fresh buffalo mozzarella is delivered most days. We have the services of an excellent local butcher. Fresh fruit, vegetables, bread, cheese and small goods are delivered daily to the local fruiteria and 3 local supermarkets. A fishmonger brings his supplies to the piazza 5 days per week. There is a local fish monger at the marina. A store on the stairs from the piazza sells local anchovies preserved in salt or oil RESTAURANTS They are all very good and you can choose between them to suit the style of dining you are after, the environment and your budget. Tre Guefi - Pizzeria, on Via Roma with glorious views to the sea and a wonderful location for sunset. Pizza, simple fish and pasta dishes. L'Osteria dal Borgo - Popular, local osteria serving simple but delicious fare, great salads and vegetables, grilled and fried fish, and pasta. Be sure to book in the summer months to avoid disappointment. Belvedere - this restaurant is situated about 1 km out of town on the road to Ascea. It is an easy walk but take care when walking back in the dark. The food is very good, traditional fare, includes home made pasta, antipasto, small goods and fish feature highly. Family run, home grown produce. choose the house wine Angeolina's - Pisciotta Marina Excellent restaurant fare, verging on fine dining. A delight sitting in the garden beside the sea for lunch or dinner, one of our absolute favourites. Great wine list too. Call Rinaldo - (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) for a reservation. Per Bacco Another firm favorite, located in an olive grove above the sea in Marina Campagna. Relatively simple but excellent food. House made pasta, great fish and vegetable dishes and desserts. In the evening the olive wood fire is lit and fish, buffalo, lamb and beef cooked this way are most memorable. Excellent wine list. Call Vito for a reservation and a complimentary transfer in the Per Bacco Shuttle (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) Catholic Mass Services and Festivals There are 2 churches in Pisciotta and one on the road to the Marina. SS Peter and Paul in Piazza Pagano at the end of Via Roma is truly beautiful and sitting there for a Sunday evening service with the choir and the processions it is a wonderful experience. Traditional religious festivals run throughout the year. If you are lucky enough to be here for one you will enjoy additional church services, processions and brass bands and sometimes fireworks. Easter and Christmas pageants in Pisciotta are very special. MUSIC IN THE PIAZZA In the summer there is weekly music program in Piazza Pagano from late June to Mid August. Throughout most of August there are regular memorable nightly performances from the grandstand constructed in Piazza Pinto. Car access is possible from Ascea, Vallo and Palinuro. There is free parking outside the village centre, approximately 150 m. There is paid parking available adjacent to the centro storico in Via Forresta. Pisciotta is 3km from Pisciotta Palinuro railway station which has direct access to Agropoli, Paestum, Salerno, Pompeii, Naples, Rome and Milan to the north and to Sapri (Basilicatta), San Giovanne (Calabria) and Messina, Syracuse and Palermo (Sicily) to the south. There is a local taxi service available throughout the year. In the summer time, local buses and additional car services connect the village with the marina, local beaches, and with the railway station. The beach can be reached from Casa San Mark by foot in 15 minutes via the stairs on foot or 40 minutes on foot by the road. RUBBISH collection and recycling is taken extremely seriously throughout Italy and especially in Pisciotta. Information about this is detailed in your guest information package. Failure to comply will mean that your rubbish will not be collected, the cats may get into bags incorrectly sorted and left out and you will be entirely at the mercy of the local signore - Good luck with that! MARKET DAYS Food, clothing and homewares - every Wednesday in Piazza Pinto Most days through summer at Pisciotta Marina there are a variety of market trucks Locally grown and produced food - women from the nearby hills bring home grown fruit, vegetables and eggs, and home produced cheese, smallgoods, honey and preserves every Wednesday and Saturday morning on the stairs of Via Tuvolo, outside Bar Tre Fontana. Get in early to beat the locals! Believe me it is a worthwhile battle! It starts between 0730 and 8 am and its all over often by 11am. SEAFOOD A refrigerated van with all manner of whole fish, and shell fish comes to Piazza Pinto on Tuesday - Saturday (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). Another battle to be had with the locals, cats, wasps, restauranteurs and home cooks all lining up. There is also an excellent fish monger in Marina Pisciotta at the port There is a store - Surregelati on the corner of Piazza Pinto and Via Forresta (opposite Bar Tre Fontana) which sells frozen fish fillets and whole fish, octopus, calamari, prawns etc as well as other frozen items including very good gelato. Just check place of origin on the packaging as it is not all from Italy. I have found the Italian fish is generally very good.
