The Stablehouse - Enjoy Peaceful Country Living
The Stablehouse is a furnished two-bedroom guest rental adjacent to one of the barns/stables of the beautiful 75 acre Herold Farms in the Alto Pass area. The interiors have a western theme. The rental includes a full kitchen with front porch, back patio, arbor and BBQ, and sleeps four people. Take it easy at this unique and tranquil getaway. A corral and stables are available for your horses (we don't rent). We welcome hikers, vacationers, wine tasters, equestrians and hunters and others. The Stablehouse is on a farm with pastures and horse barns/corrals. It's located in the Shawnee National Forest and the Ozarks, so the surrounding terrains is hilly, with a mixture of fields and forests. The rooms are comfortable with all the amenities you will probably need. Bedding, towels, local tv, a large selection of DVDs and some games and toys for children. Parking is in front of The Stablehouse. It's ok to park on the grass unless it's muddy. The driveway is circular so you can drive around. Leave an open lane for other vehicles to drive through. Also, for inside access there is a 1” differential (lip) into the kitchen. Wheelchairs have successfully negotiated this in the past. In the bathroom there is no grab bar for assistance. My husband and I (Keith and Loren) live on the same property. My co-host, Julie, will arrange for your stay and communicate with you before your arrival. She is also available to help answer questions anytime. Alto Pass Alto Pass is a small historic village located in the Shawnee National Forest and in the Southern Illinois Ozarks, 15 miles south of Carbondale, Illinois, and midway between St. Louis, Missouri, and Nashville, Tennessee. The surrounding area consists of farms, orchards and vineyards. The Stablehouse is located along the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, just a mile past the Peach Barn Vineyards and a little ways past the Bald Knob Cross of Peace turnoff. The closest towns are Anna and Carbondale, with grocery stores and restaurants. Southern Illinois University is in Carbondale. Alto Pass has a convenience store - Duty's Country Store that includes a deli. Parking is best in front of the porch or on the grass if it’s muddy. Leave a clear lane for other vehicles to pass. Walking in the pastures is ok but take care for holes, snakes, ticks and anything of danger. Well-behaved dogs are welcome but not on furniture, and must be leashed when outside. Also they cannot be left alone unless crated. Bring your own crate however we have a medium-sized one for emergencies. No cats please. Our neighbor is a working horse barn. They give riding lessons, train horses and have youth and family rodeo events and training clinics. For dates of these events see information about the Shawnee Arena and Stables, online.
