The town developed on an important crossing of the Owenmore River. The meandering picturesque Ballisodare River, flows through the village, draining a large area in County Sligo, including Lough Arrow and Templehouse Lake, into Ballisodare Bay. Salmon fishing takes place mainly in the pools at the bottom of the Ballisodare Falls and in the stretch just above the falls.
