The town developed on an important crossing of the Owenmore River. Ballisodare is the site of an ancient silver mine, re-opened and worked in the 19th and 20th century, hence where this townhouse and the street’s presumably gained its name. The meandering picturesque Ballisodare River, flows through the village, draining a large area in County Sligo, including Lough Arrow and Templehouse Lake, into Ballisodare Bay. Salmon fishing takes place mainly in the pools at the bottom of the Ballisodare Falls and in the stretch just above the falls.
