The Gatehouse is nestled in the Loire valley, near the medieval citadel of Loches, in a truly magical unspoilt location within 30 acre grounds of the remains of a chateau. It's a perfect if you are looking for a quiet place to unwind, social distance with unlimited roaming ability. Suitable for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers, families and furry friends. We try really hard to provide a home away from home, where everyone (from the smallest) feels truly welcome and comfortable. The Gatehouse is in the 30 acre grounds of the remains of a medieval Chateau which was sold for the first time in 1341 but we believe the location has been inhabited since Roman times. The cottage has it's own enclosed garden and private access gate, with off-street parking but you are welcome to roam the rest of the grounds of the Chateau. There are two bedrooms (one with a double bed and the other with two single beds) and a shower room upstairs and a further double bedroom (where you have the option of a double bed or two singles) and bathroom on the ground floor. There is electrical central heating throughout but also a wood-burning stove in the open plan living area because what's the point of being in the country without a fire to snuggle up in front of in the evening? The kitchen is equipped with fridge, stove, dishwasher and microwave. We also provide cots, baby gates, high chairs if necessary but please ask in advance. We don't know when the cottage dates from but it's clearly ancient. One half of the building forms the cottage and the other contains the cider press where you can store bikes etc and you will also find the washing machine. There is an outdoor table and seating area and BBQ for use in fine weather. The cottage has it's own enclosed garden and private access gate but you are welcome to roam the rest of the grounds of the Chateau and explore. We hope you love it as much as we do! You are welcome to fish the lake but will have to provide your own rods and tackle, and children are welcome to play in the hay barn and generally add to the chaos (within reason)! There is someone on the property at all times who will be able to help you should you need to. Please let us know in advance if you want a welcome pack, the fridge stocked with basics like milk, juice, butter etc, if you are arriving late so we can leave lights on /fire burning and a bottle of wine out after your journey. The medieval double citadel of Loches is 20 minutes away by car and its famous bi-weekly market, cafes, restaurants and Chateau. We are 3.5 km away from the village of Flere-La-Riviere where there is a boulangerie and a fabulous butchers, and 6 km from Saint Flovier where there is a pharmacy, boulangerie and lovely restaurant with a prix-fixe lunch menu. Montresor, one of the most beautiful villages in France is 25 minutes away. The famous Zoo de Beauval is a 40 minute drive away. 45 minutes from Chenanceau, arguably the most famous Chateau in France after Versailles. 50 minutes to Ambiose, it's chateau, its bustling market and da Vinci's chateau Clos Luce. 1.30 hours from Chambord. There are also a variety of activities closer by, including some of the smaller chateau where children can dress up and imagine they are living in medieval France, canoeing on the Cher, wonderful bike rides and walks in the forest. There are direct Ryan Air flights to Tours from London and Dublin. Tours is an hour away by car, and there are car hire companies at the airport. With the children we generally travel to and from the UK with Brittany Ferries via Caen - Portsmouth. It's 6 hours on the ferry but miles easier than having them in a car and there are always lots of things for them to do and its just easier because of car seats etc and needing transport when in France. We have horses and dogs on the property and young children so the confusion and fun that goes with that and a restoration project, however the cottage is 300 meters from where we live so you will have privacy.
